Presumably this is the so-called "Yang Shaohou" material Mizner learned from Liang Dehua, yes?

Hey Jon,

Is Liang's YSH material questionable ?
I came across some scepticism of that on FB recently; I'd be interested what your take on that is. It comes across authentic to me; going by the metric I'm most familiar with, which is 'form'. The lineage he claims doesn't seem unreasonable.

Perhaps I came across as a bit too dismissive / cynical, allow me to rephrase.

There's no problem with the lineage - unlike some others (Erle M!) Liang's grand-teacher Gu Lisheng definitely did study with YSH - we have dates, places, etc.

YSH was famous for his sudden, crisp short power - for example there are even records of him being able to launch [fajin] with just two fingers.

So for any branch claiming YSH material, the key question is, can they show any of the jin skills YSH was famous for?

To my eyes Liang's fast form is fine as far as it goes, but doesn't show any fundamentally different mechanics from YCF material. Arguably other branches such as Wu Tunan (yes I know he is a v controversial figure) or even Wang Yongquan give more clues to what YSH's form / shenfa were like.

Obviously given that I don't actually practice taiji any more, YMMV, IMHO, etc.

Ok, that makes sense, I'm quite familiar with the flavour of a lot of the Wu Tunan stuff.
It used to be my favourite, the Singapore guys.

i think the quality is short percussive, shaky type power you'r speaking of.
where they are a bit on the longer power by the looks of their techniques training.

no doubt we can get into it a bit more over a rum in the near future :)
There was an interesting usage video posted on the fajin project not long ago.

The small circle just means small class of like 12 or fewer I think. Same Mizner material I assume.

It's not a separate flavor like small circle jiujitsu for example.
The form is the notes, the quan is the music
