Martial Arts Tournament in Montreal, Canada

Postby xingyijuan on Fri Jul 11, 2008 1:42 pm

Master Yang Hai is presently on the project of organizing an internal martial arts tournament here, in our beautiful city of Montreal, Canada. This tournament will have the following categories:

• Form competition
• Weapons competition
• Push Hands competition
• Sparring competition

The competitions rules will follow China's rule set, as far as they can be applied.

The event will take place in November, this year. More details on the exact date, fees and conditions will come as we get in touch with promoters, teachers, organizations and other resources in town.

We are interested in eF's community opinions

We know that many people from around Montreal will come. The question that interest us is, how many people from outside would be interested in this event. So, we'd like to know how many members of eF's community would be interested in coming?

Also, to those who have tournament experience, if you had any suggestions, ideas, we would love to hear you out.

Thank you all for your interest and support.

advice:
get good insurance. signing waivers will not keep folks from trying to sue the organizers for medical costs if they get injured.

get your divisions/weight classes nailed down well in advance.

limit the number of competitors per division for the first tournament.

make sure there are enough judges.

feed the judges and tournament staff.

plan, plan, plan some more. and realize that you will not be able to keep to your schedule no matter how hard you try (which is a good reason for limiting the number of competitors the first time out so you can get a feel for the chaos).

have everyone preregister and pay fees up front.

hope it's a raging success!

If my teacher wouldn't kill me for it, I would totally wear my hello kitty shirt that says "I'm sexy" and is like four sizes too small.
But I suspect if I did, Mr.Yang would Beng quan me in the solar plexus and tell me to go home and not come back ;D

Start small: That's why we are making it a "only internal martial arts" event, to keep the infrastructure concise and, face it, that's what we know better.

Mix, he wouldn't do that, he would go "Old Skool" with you. He would take you to a corner, tell you how much you have improved, that he didn't have anything more to show you and that you should go out in the world and not come back. ;D

He would also tell me not to mention to anyone that he was my teacher.... you know, so I could seem all mysterious :-X

To give us a better idea, we need to know if people in the Montreal surroundings would be interested.

Is the fighting area an octagonal surface surrounded by a fence?

Seriously, my main beef with MA tournaments, is that often I had to wait for hours to fight, when with a bit of organizations things could have happened much faster. For example, in my TKD days, our group got ready around 16:00 but I fought around 22:00 or 22:30. It sucks and it drains you. If you can organize it so things happen more or less on schedule, I am sure that many will appreciate it.

Another thing is to expect a lot of bitching. Almost every single tournament has people not happy with the way they lost, especially when the fight is even. There will be accusations of unfairness, cheating etc. Not a big deal though, but expect them to happen.

For sparring, make sure that you have paramedics ready.

I hope this is going to happen, because AFAIK we have zero CMA tournaments in Quebec, except those silly things with our local clown Jocelyn Toy. Anyways, tournaments are a good motivation factor for training I think. You can expect a small delagation from my school in Quebec City, our teacher's actually a student of Yang Hai. This should be fun!
