New Books
*******************************************************************
Tai Chi Concepts and Experiments: Hidden Strength, Natural Movement, and Timing, by Robert Chuckrow. Yes, the long title makes it pretty clear. The author covers a lot of ground in detail in this e-book available on Amazon.com. Robert Chuckrow was a student of the famous Professor Cheng Man-Ch'ing, in New York. This author has written several other books about tai chi that have been well recieved. This latest offering looks at many of the more subtle points in tai chi, provoking the reader to dig deeper. Almost everyone will find something thought provoking in this book.

In the Presence of Cheng Man Ching

When karate and jiu-jitsu expert William C. Phillips encounters a master of the soft and graceful movements of tai chi in 1970s New York Chinatown, his physical and spiritual approach to martial arts and life are transformed forever. Master Cheng teaches Phillips how to breathe, to give up physical strength, to rely on energy, to study calligraphy, Chinese philosophy and the art of being human.

From the author…
I was the most junior student, both in age and in seniority, to become a teacher in Professor Cheng’s school. He took an interest in me, and, as I drove him to the Association, and got medicine from him, I was able to talk to him personally, as well as be there for his public talks.
I share the information I gleaned, as well as my thoughts on it. He said that there are no secrets, and we just need to practice, relax and have faith in what we were taught. . There are no secrets, but that does no mean that everything is apparent, just that it is not hidden.
I hope my book, in addition to giving my history up to and through my time with Professor Cheng, will unlock some of the mysteries that people seem to find in his teachings.
William C. Phillips

The Soft Answer, Verbal T’ai Chi for Sociable Self Defense

Local teachers Susan Lowell and Rita Solorzaro, from Northern Virginia, have published a new book about T’ai Chi along with their two sisters. The book is entitled “The Soft Answer, Verbal T’ai Chi for Sociable Self Defense.” It is a book that applies tai chi theory to other aspects of life such as relationships, both social and professional, and personal growth. It offers practical advice and insight into everyday encounters that we all experience but often don’t engage in consciously. Just as in Push hands, social situations require good listening skills. Listening leads to understanding and allows better decision making.

The book is available on Amazon.
