It is a rough sport though

Yeah I wouldn't think cutting would get very far, there would be all the blood and the obvious wounds would give it away.
From what I understand, underwater it's pretty much no holds barred with fists and feet.

The whole thing is basically an illustration of a basic combat strategy, fight them where they're weak and you're strong. You see it directly with you've got fighters who favor a particular dynamic being pulled into their opponent's game and getting their ass kicked.

Also the air force combat controllers and pararescue troops incorporate water combat into their basic training. Throw you in the water and a couple other dudes just go to town on you from what I understand. The say that part of training sees the highest drop out due to people who just can't take it. They freak out, call it "wigging out in the pool"

My introduction to jui jitsu was in lifesaving
We were taught to do an arm manipulation and rear naked choke to get a panicking victim back to shore

Interesting

A life guard long ago.. for a summer in the military while in Korea
The training as you may know was quite tough...

Covers some of the approaches and escapes from active victims in the water..

In our training it was stressed if the person could move, not to approach to close try to calm them down....
while just staying out of reach...
