I think the problem with most of these applications is that his guard is not tight enough. Using the lead hand to defend contralaterally can work, but it needs to be much tighter and the hands need to be kept up. Using the rear hand to defend the lead hand attacks is safer in general, however. To work realistic technique, even in compliant practice, the attacker should use some combination attacks.
