The reason I post these pieces is not to argue with anyone but simply to provide information about the system we know and practice. This is not a claim of unique authenticity---

Cool! 8-)

Count, I don't know if you are joking about that particular diagram but in general, that is the basic idea behind converting the luohan linear forms to quasi-linear [some circles].

Part, and not the ONLY part of the Yi Jing theory applied here, is there are appropriate points for stepping across the circle and particular times---e.g. the trigram associated with father may be connected, for stepping purposes, to first eldest son and not to daughter. I only know some of this by discussion and old notes and not by practice.

There is also a way to incorporate a sideways figure eight into the post training but I don't know the details---interestingly you fight that in Huang Zhi's video clip used in walking which we used the sideways eight walking for a two person exercise.

In the clip below posted by Dan Farber. In the second part of the clip, Liu takes the linear form directly into the the circle.

Also, one, and not the only explanation, for us calling it bagua quan is that most of open hand linear forms we use can also be played with a bagua weapon such as the deerhorn knives, judge's pen, and needles. When you play the form empty-handed, as though you have a weapon in it, the hand is held as though the weapon were gripped, lightly gripped.

Thanks for the decent discussion.
