You are very correct in this point. Dmitri, how far are you willing to travel?

steelincotton wrote:I'm no master, but even I have seen this to be true when I start pushing with newbies; at first, they are stiff (filled with tension, no structure, and not opened like they need to be) and they feel very little except that they are being pushed or knocked off balance, etc. After pushing with them for a while, and they have learned to let go of a lot of their tensions, ego, etc., their reactions become more receptive to the output being utilized. This is my experience anyway. FWIW.

There is definitively some truth in this. I can push away my teacher very far and he can push away me very far. It is a different feeling with others for sure. I guess when you work with someone for over 20 years, there must be some special understanding of the other.

However, sometimes Chinese students "help" their teacher, or in other words - overact, so his teacher will not loose face. I worked with a teacher in Bejing for a short while. He wanted me to show my specialities, so when I demoed a move, like some qinna, on him he would always overact so I would succeed. He was very kind and didn't want me to loose face. So he made sure he went on the ground before I even had secured the correct angle. This is a very special chinese trademark of friendship and respect which can be very hard for us "foreigners" to understand. ;)

I have played Shuai Jiao and pushed with John, he doesn't let anyone do anything. Even though I have 90 lbs on him he keeps up with me at shuai jiao and is hard to move.

That's precisely what I mean, though, these real good Taiji cats get you to move yourself, as far as I can tell. Whatever you do, you're helping them move you.

John does your friend do Wing Tsun as well, what is that Iron Dummy thing?

I liked the push hands clip above, good clear explanations and no dramatic reactions.
