Ashe,

Great stuff. You should post to this thread when you put up new material...

Are you going to be able to make it to the October workshop?

i wish. it's going to be an awesome workshop. the Sifu is going to cover some elements of the phoenix eye and some elements of bridging. should be some really, really cool stuff.

Cool clip Ashe. Look forward to seeing more. Too bad you can't make it to the workshop. I'll be there this time.

so this clip seems to be a bomb...

maybe i didn't title it correctly, but if that's not the case just a few follow up questions to keep in mind for the next one;

for those of you who watched the clip but felt it wasn't even worth commenting on, why? too boring? too basic? not interested?

how many folks didn't bother watching the clip because it wasn't on youtube?

what topics might you be interested in?

for those that did watch the clip, what do you think of the idea of training to be round without using the elbow, so that when you do add elbow movement back in, you'd be even rounder? valid or bogus?

anyone? anyone?

I dug the clip. I have a tendency to flex at the elbows a little too much. Times I should be condensing more to maintain roundness, I end up bending my elbows too much and losing roundness. But I do think there has to be some elbow movement though. It might just be that my brain is too fried from working long hours, but I can't envision spinning with proper rolling and pivoting at the point of contact unless there's some elbow motion.

Anyhow, I'll have to give it a try at some point and see how it goes. I think there's value in experimenting with limited motion at one joint to understand how that joint ties in with the motion at the other joints.

nice vid Ashe thx for that.

With regard to elbow movement the idea of working with limited motion through that joint is good. Often when I work with people and don't mention the elbow it moves lots, often breaking structure. When I mention not using the elbow but rather keep the elbow 'in plaster' the elbow still moves( or flexs) but not to the same degree. I think that this focus on not using the elbow can help avert the laziness that can often creep into training.

i'm not sure that the auido was clear, but the idea is to get round without using the elbow and then you can add elbow flexion/extension back in when you need it. the idea being that when you need it, it'll be there because we already use the elbow so much in our every day life.

so i guess what i'm trying to say is not "that you shouldn't ever use elbow movement to get the job done", just that you can bump up your skill level by learning how to be round without it, and then add it back in and then you'll be even rounder.

I don't know about that really ... Most people seem to use, or over-use, their elbows in daily life because they have tense shoulders...

How can you go around with tense shoulders or tense jaws? It is very hard to understand a reason, but many people do that.

If you tense your shoulder, you might put out your elbows a lot, which make your shoulders get even more tense. Why do you think the tai chi classics say "sink the elbows"?
