Part 3 - Torben talking about some of the non-martial aspects of IMA and taking some of the martial benefits and principles over into daily life while I nod frantically ;D

Thanks Bao - hopefully I get this one right :p

Part 4 of the interview - in this one, Torben talks about the "benefits" of external/tension based training like weight training and kettlebells, whether is it good or bad to have different teachers, “substitute methods”, the importance of doing what you love in life among other things.

I found the interviews interesting, though this last one didn't give much at all. Nothing that can give me a feeling of who Sam Tam is or how he is as a teacher.

I found all these interesting
The only thing I can say is when he does not name his former teacher he names a lot of teachers
Like myself you start ti think who it can be and fill in the spaces
If you can't name people better to not reference them
Don't put power into the form let it naturally arise from the form

Bao: Glad you find some of it interesting - it isn't necessarily meant to be immediately useful. Some of it is just information that might lead to further interest and inquiry. :)

Wayne: It is difficult to talk about events if you can't reference them. Doesn't mean you have to go out of your way to put names on the persons involved, if it risks reflects poorly on them. Not going out of your way to name a person in a story if it may be perceived to bring negative attention is generally considered respectful I think.

Part 6:
Here Torben talks about "sinking the Qi", how standing Meditation as a part of it, Torben's own frustrations over the years when talking to Sam Tam about how to do it and more:

It's the person who is interviewed that should have an interest to give a useful or meaningful answer. If you don't have that interest, why accept an interview in the first place? :-\

Here Torben talks about "sinking the Qi", how standing Meditation as a part of it, Torben's own frustrations over the years when talking to Sam Tam about how to do it...

Most people should feel the same frustration watching this. But it is just about the kind of answer I suspected. Some fuzzy answer that doesn't explain much at all. I know what people mean and what what different things they actually do when they claim that theu "sink the qi". If you mean that you do other things instead of "sinking the Qi", then saying that you "sink the qi" is not only confusing and misleading, but dishonest and deceptive. And that is how I feel about just everyone who says that he or she does so. It's unnecessary to build fences between teachers and students... and many of these teachers probably laugh good at their students when they watch them trying to climb the imaginary fence that isn't there... :P

Well, cudos for Torben who at least tried getting a straight answer from his teacher.... I very much do respect his honesty about the fuzziness of this issue and that he doesn't use fanzy words and try to look good. 8-)

I have much more to say about the subject, but I'll leave it for now.

The question I asked was jus answered on another forum dealing with Huangs refined form
It was who I thought it was ,so I can take all his other students out of the guesswork

Bao: I meant that some information isn't applicable in an immediately practical manner. But the information can still be valuable in making some pieces fall into place in one's understanding of a subject or person etc. Some questions lead more easily into practically useful answers, others less. Having a conversation style interview cover both during its course and flow seems quite natural to me at least.

Please say whatever you wish regarding "sinking the qi" or any other topic you may feel boiling up inside ;) Sharing is good for all, even if it only turns out to be grumpy rambling ;D .

Part 7 of the interview - one of my favorites. Torben talks about different teaching methods and what to look (out) for in a teacher.

I liked a lot of what he had to say. Seems reasonable.
... which make me think about that it contradicts the common Huang mysticism.... (In a good sort of way obviously)

If by Huang mysticism you mean the "Master Huang had superior magical abilities and could fly" then yeah, that part is pervasive in many places :p Unfortuneately...
But the teaching method of the system is (can be) quite rational and effective despite that.

Part 10 of the interview - On being a good training partner.
"if my partner makes progress, I progress. Or as my teacher Master Sam Tam had pointed out more than once, “up through history, they all come in pairs.”"
