Bagua Leg SPJ

Postby Bob on Tue Nov 25, 2008 8:00 am

SPJ or any others, can you identify this Taiwan player from Wu Tan? These are his clips of bagua leg and its 98% exactly like I learned it and I am curious as to who he is. Although its missing the middle part, its flavor is almost the way I learned it.

Thanks.

I like the first clip a lot. Its like bagua mixed with pigua.
I think those two would make a great combo!

The bagua leg, fist, hand, hard palm etc. etc. all contain elements of Luohan.

I thought bagua and pigua might mix well, too - but my friend who does pigua said it doesn't. :(

Piqua is a great compliment to bagua.

Bob,

Good clips. I have a slightly different take on bagua leg form. Not quite as "shaolin-like". Especially after comparing with some of our bagua cousins who leave out high kicks altogether. I add more low sweeps, but not the big sweeps on the turn. Not criticizing the performance, it's excellent. I don't know who the player is though.

I do recognize Damon Hwang doing a great version of 18 lohan form from the Yin Ho Chian lineage of northern shaolin. I have to meet that guy some day. I also learned those forms before I met Jason Tsou.

Thanks for posting,

Jeff

I don't know his name (probably the poster himself, mcgeorge168 on You Tube), but he's doing He Jinghan's Gong Baozhai 宮寶齋 baguaquan. Like all Yin Fu derivatives, it contains elements of luohanquan in it - lots, in this case.

Appreciate your response Lazyboxer, but the performer is from the Wu Tan line---his other posted clips are xiao baji, 6 harmony mantis, Chen taiji [the version I know], Yang taiji [Liu Yun Qiao's version].

As Count pointed out, this particular version is a Wu Tan line and is very close in flavor to how my teacher, Tony Yang, learned from Liu Yun Qiao.

Tony is in Taiwan [headed for the Guoshu tournament in Tainan] so I was just curious as to who the individual was.

Thanks for the response.

Although posted previously, here is Damon Hwang's performance:

Just for fun, here are Damon Hwang's performance of the pigua forms we do:

Personally I always found mizong yi II to have a closer flavor to some of the bagua quasi-linear forms I know:

Count, I think one of Jason's students, Jonathon?, has a clip of the bagua leg on youtube?

They are all in the same ballpark, I was just wondering who he was.

Here is one for you Count, although I think it has already been posted.

These clips are good examples of piqua.

Now, who doesn't think this wouldn't add mad entering skills and a couple more inches of long power to your bagua? Not to mention, the flexibility and overall "good for your body" training?
-loco-

Sorry for the slightly off topic post. Piqua is so cool it deserves it's own thread. @@@

I do think pigua is very cool - if I wasn't doing bagua, that would be pretty high on my list :D (Well, except that noone seems to teach it as a main style...)

I don't remember what my friend said exactly - something about the body methods being contradictory...

Anyway, bagua does already have mad entering skills and long power ;) It just, you know, does things differently...

I can't argue with your point about bagua's entering skills. I just said piqua would add to your repertoire. Especially from long range. I don't think there is anything that can really not be found in either system as stand alone systems. Except possibly, training methods for specific refined power issues. But for the sake of your argument that body methods might be contradictory, Sifu used to call piqua, my medicine. I guess it is good for what ails me. Maybe it would be bad for another body type or temperament? I kind of doubt it though. :-\

Well, I would love to learn some :D They seem to have a very nice system, with cool weapons and all...

Looking at my friend do it, though, seems like he throws his whole body (or whips it) - that is rather different from bagua, I guess. As for what each system has - well, each specializes in its own thing, baguazhang is famous for its special entering methods :D

The only pigua I know (at all) is the teensy little bit that the wushu designers included in the wushu forms :D Basically, wulongpanda (the thing where you whirl your arms around and then (usually) slap the ground). I do remember when doing it, my hands would get all full and packed with blood!

Adam Hsu has 2 piqua video's that are good for showing basics, form (+applications), and special training methods of our system. I think they're worth the money.
