It would be more interesting to know what Mr He’s focus is, what he is focusing on.

Isn’t that exactly what he does? ;)

If both your heart and your practice have been dedicated to Bagua for decades, it would be strange, and probably also dishonest, to not perform tai chi from a Bagua perspective and with a Bagua heart. 8-)

Mr He has never stated that he is a master of tai chi, or even a good Tai Chi practitioner. He has stated that he started his “internal” martial arts practice with tai chi, but after a few years, he thought that he couldn’t get pass a certain stage, that he felt that it was hard to develop further. But then he met his Bagua master and felt that Bagua suit him much better.

However, whatever the reason to perform something a certain way, everyone who knows about Mr He’s teaching also know that he has a great and very detailed knowledge of the human body, so there is a good reason to believe that Mr He knows both exactly what he is doing and why. And also that he knows about his own limitations.

I won’t address my own views on this performance. But I can tell you this, regardless if people are right or wrong, it’s still always funny to hear non-Yang Tai Chi practitioners dictate how Yang Tai Chi should be. ;D

It is not good tai chi no matter what other things he does
I have seen tai chi done from a ba kua perspective and so don't judge it from that point of view
Also I have a little knowledge of yang with over 40 years of daily practice

Good. thank you for clearifying.

The last comment about non-experience was not addressed to you. That is why I divided the quotes, first answering to your comment, and after that to one Chen stylist and one non-tai chi practitioner. I do know that you have a good amount of (yang) tai chi experience and I always respect your views, regardless how you put them in words. 8-)

Hejinghan has a very specific body method. It is different to almost all internal arts I have seen yet he is extremely skilled. It is that body method that is influencing his taichi (which he has also been practicing for over 40 years as far as i know) as it absolutely should.

I would also say consider that he was an employed researcher of martial arts and will have been exposed to LOTS of traditional yang lineages. But ultimate that is unimportant

Some people here know or have trained with him. So I thought some may like to see his expression of taiji through the lens of his ba gua body.

If you can only see things through your own lens, that is fine of course.

I think he is very good. It's not his primary art so he is probably trying to remember the sequence and not turn overtly. But it is tai.chi in everything that matters. Left and right, full and empty, straight line through the head, energy from ground to fist. What else can you ask for?

Pakua and tai chi are one and the same when you reach a point and he has reached that point. Stiffness is probably due to old injuries and older knees which is understandable. Slowness is probably him connecting dots on the fly. Which is very very impressive.

You How old are his older knees
His stepping is bad
he double weights
His posture is lacking
If all these are due to lack of practice it might be better if he didn't demo
I can't judge his tai chi through his ba kua but all the things I see lacking from a tai chi basis would also apply to ba Kua
Jtan if you think he is good may I ask how much tai chi expierence you have
Bao I apologise for my poor wording but I am a simple man

I don’t agree. They articulate things differently, build different bodies, and they both have both many different expressions. High levels in these styles can look very similar, but they can also look very different.

Personally, I’ve found them more and more incompatible and decided to completely give up Bagua. I guess I’m not as gifted as some other people who teach different styles. ;)

Wayne made some good points, although I prefer to look at his performance from a slightly different and more forgiving point of view. But I can’t see any Tai Chi body. This is just not how someone who trained tai chi mechanics for a long time would look like.

Again, it was not meant as criticism. I appreciate the value you add to the discussions.

Important questions

1. Does he turn his toe in?
2. Is it left palm up right palm down?
3. Is his liver qi moon or sun?
4. Can he manifest a superluminal phase wave?
5. Is it just a guy running through a form in a park? About forty feet away.
