Staying Yin/Yang balanced -- a Sumo example

Postby C.J.W. on Thu Jun 14, 2018 7:42 pm

Here's a English-language documentary on Sumo produced by the Japanese. From 23:30 to 25:15, a scientist analyzes the movements of Sumo grand champion (Yokozuna) Hakuho and discusses what enables him to withstand the powerful charge of an opponent while remaining balanced.

What he is doing is what I consider to be a very rudimentary application of how to stay Yin/Yang balanced -- keeping the lower body stable and still (yin) while the upper body moves and engages the opponent (yang), thus avoiding double-heaviness.

Of course, with Taiji the process of avoiding double-heaviness (or remaining Yin/Yang balanced) should be much more versatile and refined, with the Yin and Yang points constantly changing from one part of the body to another depending on the opponent's reaction.
