MASTER WONG!!! Dropping some rear naked choke defense knowledge!

Aaaaaaaaaand here is why it is all a bit silly.

In all seriousness, for those who are not sure on the mechanics of a rear naked choke, this is a good breakdown of the whys and wherefores of the choke and (very) common mistakes we see in 'defense' videos. Also he tries some of the common defenses, Striking the groin and eye gouging etc. The groin strikes seem pretty available actually in the standing position, but like he says they would make him choke harder and not let go in a 'real' scenario so i am not sure what good they would really do.

I have actually used this choke to put someone out when working on the door, it is literally a few seconds and they go limp. The notable thing about the experience for me was that the guy immediately grabbed my choking arm and held onto it till he went limp ... there was no chance of him getting out but i think it was a 'natural reaction' to having someone squeezing your neck like that.

thanks.

Yep, the reflex is to eliminate the threat to the neck directly and ASAP (most likely by grabbing the choking arm); can't imagine anyone would have it in them to focus on anything else at that time -- let alone a properly-targeted groin strike.
It would be much more helpful to focus one's training on what to do in those few precious moments before the choke is fully set. Because once it's really on... you're really out. :)

If you're in a rear naked choke, you fucked up a long time ago.....

Also - let's be real. "Master Wong" is just an entertainer. He's like a WWE wrestler. He's making money on YouTube clip adverts. If you think he's giving away martial arts secrets, you also fucked up a long time ago ;D

Howwwwww DARE you!!! ;D ;D

Although, that may very well be true, but you just need to read some of the comments on his threads to see people take him seriously.

Really i just thought the breakdown was useful for many on its own, particularly the 'Just hit the balls and gouge the eyes' crowd, rather than as a take down of the, frankly awesome MASTER WONG!

I find him quite entertaining, so long as you take it all with big pinch of salt.

Plus, people are generally quite dumb, you know, as a species. ;D

How does the old Chinese saying go? "The wise man points to the moon; the fool...
...holds up his own finger and says 'My one is tremendously bigger and longer than that old philosopher guy's one' "

I have the best finger. It's quite clever actually. I don't think you'd understand how clever it is.

I've never had a stopwatch handy but definitely the time once you've got the blood choke on good is less than six seconds.

Or put it this way. If you don't let go for more than 30 seconds then they're probably not going to wake up the same person for the rest of their life. Or they might not wake up at all. Not something to mess around with kiddies....

Thanks for posting that - an excellent video, which I hadn't seen before. I didn’t know about the aspects of ocular fixation and continuing muscular rigidity when someone is already out.

Yeah, it's a bit scary when you realise the power of chokes. Paradoxically they can be the quickest and safest method of ending a physical confrontation without injury. So long as you let go the guy comes around and quite often the fight has gone out of him completely. But saying that I know people who work on the door and had to choke out the same guy 3 times before the police arrived because he just woke up and was so drunk/high he started punching again. Last time he decided to punch the police man and that was the end of that!
