Bao wrote:No deal. "Fast form" is "fighting form", more realistic approach to shadow boxing. In Yang style, "fast form" follow the fighting principle that hand moves before the body and the body follows. In practice, body should push the hand, but in fighting the hand goes first, body follows. Even Chen Xin mention this principle in his book. If you look at Wu Tunan's form which everyone complains about being bad Tai Chi, you can see that his body is very stationary and his arms moves independent from the body. Wu claims that he was taught this form by Yang Shao Hou and that it was created by Yang Luchan.

You misunderstand what Chen Xin is saying, although it is a common question. If you understand the basic principle of taiji body mechanics, one part of the body moves, the whole body moves, the arms never move independent of the body. If you are training using a form, to some extent, you don't care what your hands are doing, where they are. You practice moving with jin, but when you fight you are concerned about where your hands are - positioning and timing become important. You have to think about where to step in order to strike, throw, lock, and so on. The idea of training jin is so you can use it in a fight. Jin is still rooted in the foot, issued through the leg, directed by the waist, and expressed in the fingers. When Chen Xin says that the body follows the hands he is not talking about body mechanics, he is talking about positioning and timing; something that anyone who has done a little sparring is aware of. FWIW.
The method of practicing this boxing art is nothing more than opening and closing, passive and active. The subtlety of the art is based entirely upon their alternations. Chen Xin

Yes, Chen Weiming,
and the 59 Postures Long Fist form prove yet again there is only one pattern, which arose from the original pattern that was found in the Large frame long form, which comes from the Chen Lao Jia form. It's the same pattern, sequence of movements. So, the 59 Posture Long Fast is just a "fast form" of an abbreviated long form. So, Yang Shou Hou's fast form (aka Small Frame Fast form/ Usage form / combat form) is not similar but uses the whole long form for its pattern. So does the Wu Fast form.

From "TAIJI SWORD Including TAIJI LONG BOXING" by Chen Weiming [1928]:

translation by Paul Brennan, Dec, 2012 wrote:增加太極長拳目錄
CATALOGUE OF POSTURES IN THE TAIJI LONG BOXING SET AS TAUGHT BY YANG CHENGFU
[The name Long Boxing certainly does not mean this let set is longer than the standard one, for it is in fact shorter. (Long before Zheng Manqing had come up with his famous short form, Yang Chengfu had already made one, though it is somewhat tricky that the Long set is not the “long set”.) The name Long Boxing refers to another name for Taiji Boxing itself, explained as being like river flowing into ocean, on and on ceaselessly, representing flow. Going by this definition, Long Boxing, which is a literal translation, connotatively translates as Flowing Boxing. That Yang Chengfu, unless it was an earlier Yang, chose to call this set Taiji Long Boxing as opposed to the other set being merely Taiji Boxing suggests the standard set may have been considered to be more of a posture awareness set while the Long Boxing set was used more as the actual flow set, though this of course is only a speculation.]

Nothing special there just the YCF form done a little quicker in a slightly little sequence
Don't put power into the form let it naturally arise from the form

Is this whole thread just about trying to prove the rather obvious fact that all tai chi long forms are based on the sequence of movements of Chen family lao jia?

, but when you fight you are concerned about where your hands are - positioning and timing become important. You have to think about where to step in order to strike, throw, lock, and so on.

Yes of course.

The idea of training jin is so you can use it in a fight. Jin is still rooted in the foot, issued through the leg, directed by the waist, and expressed in the fingers.

You only need whole body connection, when you actually connect with your opponent in order to use jin. If you move connected all of the time your movements will be very easy to read. Even if you connect with the opponent it's better to only connect with jin only when you will use it. When you move through transitions and place yourself in position, movement and intent should be hidden. "From nothing to something, from something to nothing." I believe we mean they same things but express it differently. This is something that is relatively easy to practice in sparring, but also something you can forget in solo practice as you mostly focus on connection and seldom on how to release and let go of that connection. This is why you often can see less experienced Tai Chi practitioners move and act quite clumsy in Tuishou competitions. They are too concerned with being connected and having a good structure so they compromise their ability to change, or forget how and where to place their hands, their positioning and timing. ... Sure, maybe more sparring experience would help...?

Which is 59 postures, which seems to skips most of the repeats.

No, I was looking for video of the 59 posture Long fist form, I hadn't seen it done in over 25 years.
But now that I saw it again, in retrospect, it's just the same pattern, the classic pattern that you are showing, just done faster without most of the repeats and with some fa-jing.
It should have the double kick in it though, rather than the YCF Ban Lan Chui

I think that all the pattern posture names that I have posted have proved that its all one pattern for quite a long time and it still is the same pattern.
Whether it is large frame, small frame, middle frame, fast form, slow form, Chen, Zhaobao, Yang, Wu, Wu / Ha, Sun, etc, its always the same pattern of the 'old six roads'.

Are there any Tai Ji forms practiced that don't follow this pattern? Other than the Chen Pao Chui set?

This set is claimed to be a Yang Ban Hou set, but its not a form really, its a set of exercises obviously:

In another thread you were saying you couldn't see CXW using xiong yao zhe die/chest and waist fold - that is chansijin. Which is it, easy to read or hidden? In both Yang and Chen styles the principle one part of the body moves, the whole body moves, applies all the time, not just on contact.
The method of practicing this boxing art is nothing more than opening and closing, passive and active. The subtlety of the art is based entirely upon their alternations. Chen Xin

No I spoke about Chen stylist in general. I can see it CXWs chansijin, but when he expresses jin as in the clip I posted his back is perfectly straight. What I can see there is sinking energy and use of Kai principle to issue, which is the opposite to using chest fold. Everything can be there, be hidden or be missing, it depends. What I said is that in Chen style in general, kua seems to be more important than spine or chest. My uneducated opinion only, I've never bothered to gain any deeper understanding of Chen style.

In both Yang and Chen styles the principle one part of the body moves, the whole body moves, applies all the time, not just on contact.

In solo practice, that should be the ideal. When dealing with an opponent, if your structure is connected, he can feel your structure. If your whole body moves together, he can connect through your whole structure. IME you need to know how to disconnect and when it's better to move parts independently from the rest of the body.
