Im liking this guy more and more. Plus, im suprised at the resemblance that Koryu arts seem to have with high level CMA standards.

"No, I don’t do [qigong]. No specialized internal training. In your every day life, do you stand around? No. Your martial art has to become like this."

"forms and styles are traps. The followers who only swear by this or that school are trapped."

Personally I train like this, but what does everyone else think?

Good distillation Tom,
And since someone somewhere will ask the questions eventually I'll fill in the blanks.

His Sanda coach was a JSDF (Japanese Self Defense Force) CQC instructor who had a habit of breaking the full contact kyokushin/daidojuku/shooto guys he was "teaching."
The guy came from the old school of Nihon Kempo practitioners that studied the bayonet, and used it to hammer in internal connections/usage within the body.
At the same time, he also studied intensively with an old Yagyu Shingan/Shinkage guy that was genuinelly skilled, and didn't teach officially. Basically the Yagyu instructor only taught him developmental exercises (standing, walking in weird positions, using a staff/spear as a developmental/conditioning aid etc) which taught him the basics from which he formulated the exercises he uses today in his system. There's a blurb in Aikido Journal telling of what happened when he met the guy for the first time.

Hi Upyu!

Nice to see you here as well! :)

Just an addition:
Akuzawa sais everytghing is "tanren", or "duanlian". Form, jibengong, tuishou, weapons, all are "just" duanlian.
Feng Zhiqiang have said in an interview once: Everything is "xiulian". "Xiu" here means something like: "make something better, make someone better, finer...etc"...
