seems to be from 2018. I wonder if more news emerged (didn't google around or anything) on the why or the follow on legal and other actions/consequences.

Yeah, it seems to be old news but keeps resurfacing.

They actually showed the video on local news this week. Not sure why.

I used to train with Ralph. He is intense so not a surprise but it is sad.

I think it's about to be heard in court.

Brilliant. The 5th degree black belt from the leading family of BJJ fights by sucker punching people in the head. Because, you know, GJJ is the realest, most bestest and street effective MA in the world, bro.

Next court appearance is scheduled for Nov 19. He missed the last one because he had fled to Brazil. Probably needed the extra time to lawyer up and see who the family could pay off to smooth things over, a la Conor McGregor.

It does make BJJ look bad but I also think that those within BJJ are fully aware of the "dark side" with some trying to move away from it. Unfortunately (or fortunately) though BJJ and MMA attract people who like to fight so I don't think things will change all that much. If you have a polite and nice BJJ club chances are the thug school across town will have an edge on you because they're just meaner and more aggressive.

I stopped because work took over my life (which I don't regret, in fact I am grateful for the money I can make) but I have to admit I did get tired of the hyper competitiveness of guys half my age who treated every roll like a death match. If I could have continued I would have but as it is my body gets enough punishment and injuries due to my blue collar job. The difference is my blue collar job has a retirement plan so it won out, well that and having no time to get on the mat.

Interesting comment from a BJJ instructor.

All things being equal it is a dog eat dog world so perhaps BJJ is no different. It isn't the first time I heard of Gracie punching someone.

Some awesome internal power being applied there. It was hardly seen until the coward threw the invisible elbow.

Is that the secret bjj black belt coward elbow move? I believe he also did the master level move of "kick the poor bastard with your equally coward buddy after they have been suckered".

Can't wait for the Gracie breakdown on this one or the Gracie breakdown of the court case.

As for the BJJ code of conduct - it just sounds like a load of bullshit that is aimed at taking advantage of peoples naivety. The gracies have a history of doing that. In the end when the guard fails then resort to old fashion coward, ambush & pack attacks.

He shouldn't just get a lifetime ban but a jail sentence.

Although #1 Carlos, Helio and George Gracie in Prison is ranked about right in the disgusting display of behaviour chart the article does not really do justice for what went on.

The bad seed runs deep in this family & it's sad that they are the founders of BJJ. I like that more schools are now dropping the name for just plain old submission grappling, X brand jiu-jitsu or another name like 10th planet.

:o

Thanks for sharing that.

I used to work for a company that employed some of Ralph's top students and even a relative. It was a rough and tumble crew, with lots of sparing and somewhat mean spirited pranks, but nothing too over the top (the foreman from MN was the meanest of all, and one of the only guys with no training, just a pistol in his truck). The funny thing is, and this ties into the video, we had a really crusty old wrestler who would tie them all in knots. We called him Bolo. Short, powerful, fast, and just a beast. He kicked my ass for about 8 years just about every day. During that time I was training taichi and JJJ. I got better, but he still had my number by the time I moved on to college in my late 20s. I went back to work there for a bit over a year between college and my first graduate program, and had started competing in Judo in the bay area and Japan. I had bolo's number at last, but he had also gotten a bit older, while I had gotten stronger and was both a competitor and the gatekeeper at our dojo. From this, I have always had the greatest respect for wrestling. Bolo and I are still friends, although I only see him about once a year and he now has a pronounced limp and other issues from decades of wrenching and digging and mixing concrete by hand.

“Elbow energy” is about the only nice thing to say, I guess.

Am I the only one who finds it ironically amusing that two well-known BJJ/MMA guys who are used to beating the shit out of people AND getting their shit beat out of by people on a daily basis are actually taking each other to court for "an elbow to the face"? ::)

Why not settle their grudge the old-fashioned vale-tudo way in the cage and pay-per-view the s**t out of it?

Or just chill out, get a Brazilian wax, hug, and make up. ;)

good idea on ppv. these days people pay bigger money just to see youtube stars with bad skills box.

most likely the average pro hockey player would not be too impressed by any of this.

Bad elements & thuggery exist in all of martial arts but it is very rare that we have an example of a family that has profited so much from it. Profited & even deceived with an overt "do as I say not as I do" creed.

Go to most BJJ schools and there will be a bushido-like code. It cries back to the Japanese heritage. But dig into the history and BJJ has a real ugly side where the Gracies will claim being the masters of the universe until they get stomped. Then it's just down to dirty tactics. The irony is that there are other lineages which got stomped due to this dirty element.

https://www.groundgame.training/about-us/gracie-jiujitsu/

BTW this article is a lot of hearsay but just look at Kimura's story which is well documented as well:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masahiko_Kimura

As for playing with wrestlers (or sambo, bjj, submission, catch or anyone else) ... best way to learn! It's these interactions that pretty much mould anyone to improve. It's when people go the other way of believing in their own bullshit, that a style is precious and must never be exposed, that their way is the only one way to learn or whatever the agenda is that things get stale, silly & as we've seen from the gracie thuggery ... dangerous.

I think it was in Cage Combat Something where Renzo choked out a judoka and then stepped on dude's neck as he was faced down.

It's very unfortunate but seems to be a pattern for some Gracies.

I guess a good thing is that I don't think he could get away with this in today's UFC.
