In the words of jack Nicolson
Was it a mistake or did he do it on purpose
Sad to see such a great exercise so misunderstood
Not just by him but by most I see doing it these days
Don't put power into the form let it naturally arise from the form

I would do some things differently, but I am not a very big fan of this kind of exercise. Maybe it can teach beginners something.

Still it would be interesting to know more exactly what you yourself had in mind. And how your take on the same exercise would like like.

Sorry Bao but it is something that has to be shown by touch in great detail
Let me just say the order and structure of the first to pushes is paramount
There is no sit back in those two it is the art of yielding while advancing
It is called the 7 point push not 7 point yield
I teach the pushes as a seperate punching exercise and it is all the punches you find in western boxing
As for it only being for beginners if I only practiced one pushing exercise it would be it
It's health benefits are incredible
One thing I don't like about the way it is done here is the raising and dropping
If I wanted to make my students east to push I would teach it as it is done here
Don't put power into the form let it naturally arise from the form

Yes of course. I was just curious about your own take. Hope I'll get the opportunity to meet you so you can show me your details.

His body movement is what struck me as well. What I notice is that he doesn't care to keep the centreline intact. Thought this was a bit odd. I myself treat the centreline and zhong ding very strict. This way of teaching might cause some bad habits.

That is exactly what that exercise is about
Centreline

Master Shen-Yan Shen mentions "the centreline and zhong ding" in this video. Partner work at 55:06.

Exploring Taiji with Torben Bremann
Sep 11, 2018

This is - a fairly long clip - from a workshop Master Shen-Yan Shen did in Copenhagen years ago. He is a very skillful exponent in the lineage of Master Huang Xiangxian and a student og Master Jeng (senior student and friend of Master Huang), who passed away this July. Sifu Shen-Yan Shen is a very humble and warmhearted man, who teaches openly. He is a very fine example of a man who truly lives the art of Taiji - both the martial and civil aspect. Here he teaches the 5 song gong exercises - and the two extra which is typical for his teachers teaching, and very practical in Tuishui.
