Well a soft mat does help when you insist on blocking your opponents fist with you head. Lol.

As an 0-6 amateur boxer, I at least had the courage to admit I sucked.

Beautiful -

The reason why I practice on various surfaces.
I advocate this to others LOL
I was told a Pa Kua man should be able to fight on ice.

Xu's fist was also in his eyes

It was obvious that his extended double fist had no power.

Where can I buy that jacket?

For the first 5 years a practicioner should train on a solid level surface to destinguish yin and yang in the body
It is not for the ground to yield to you but u to yield to it
It differs in combat ,with the right training u should be able to adapt to any surfaces
Don't put power into the form let it naturally arise from the form

Perhaps the surface of Xu's fist was not cohesive to his zodiac calendar qi. :P

This guy is either a f***ing idiot or a comedian.

Getting in a ring & competing is a wonderful way to learn. Sparring is even better (less time wasted on theatrics, more rounds done, more partner swapping, more ability to focus on refining weaknesses etc.).

If he is being serious he just missed out on a great lesson.

Nah. Quitting to pursue inner peace is not such a big deal but it does mean giving up on martial arts.

To keep improving explorative testing & sparring should be included. Done in a measured way (even in older years) continues to pay dividends. Comps are fine as well just should not be this mismatched.

Dspyrido,

What I was trying to say was that these old, fat, weak and out of shape "masters" can't seem to figure out that without committing to full time fight training with all the requisite requirements (i.e. strength, fitness, road work....) that getting into the ring with a gorilla like Xu is just going to result in getting the hell beat out of them.

Mixing it up with your fellow students is fun and a good investment of time on a variety levels. It is not EVER going to be sufficient to prep anyone for getting into the ring with a professional, even an older slightly paunchy one like Xu. And I suspect that may be Xu's whole point.

I think Xu's point is bringing down people claiming to be masters of martial arts with next to no fighting ability. Xu's circus acts purposefully avoid him taking on people who have incorporated sparring/pressure testing.

Training sparring can be done by leveling up. It can be started with a small group of dedicated individuals. Then it can be mixed in with other amateurs of friendly schools. As time and training progress it can be expanded to more open amateurs in the specific sports/schools eventually touching on professionals.

I think this is the process that was common in cma but was eradicated. It does not take too much to bring it back.

Doing this would at least provide a fighters chance in a challenge match.

Xu Xiaodong vs Mikhail Ryabko. Just imagine that.

Funny. Based on risk vs reward, I would have thought dk yoo would D(uc)K Yoo instead.

Based solely on Yoo's videos, I would assume Xu trains more effectively and has more fighting experience. My guess is Yoo ducks, attempts to restrict the rules, exhibition, stalls for real training time, fights someone else (e.g., Master Wong/collaboration) or loses to Xu.
