Getting in a ring & competing is a wonderful way to learn. Sparring is even better (less time wasted on theatrics, more rounds done, more partner swapping, more ability to focus on refining weaknesses etc.).
If he is being serious he just missed out on a great lesson.

Nah. Quitting to pursue inner peace is not such a big deal but it does mean giving up on martial arts.
To keep improving explorative testing & sparring should be included. Done in a measured way (even in older years) continues to pay dividends. Comps are fine as well just should not be this mismatched.
