Hidden Wulin documentary series

Postby nicklinjm on Wed Dec 23, 2020 1:58 am

China Central TV (CCTV) is currently screening a nice documentary series covering the history and current state of wushu / kungfu called The Hidden Wulin.

Features a lot of styles and teachers who will be familiar to long-time board members.

Episode 1

Interview with Ma Mingda on history of wushu
Mianzhang Quan - Shi Jianyi, Lu Mingjie (interesting to see that Mianzhang techniques are being taught to PRC police)
Xinyi Liuhe - Song Guobin branch in Anhui
Shuai Jiao - Li Baoru and Yao Honggang (also shows one of Yao Honggang's MMA matches)
Miao Dao teacher

Episode 2

This episode is more focused on weapons, particularly northwestern staff style Heihu Gun (black tiger staff) and Biangan (whipstaff) teacher Bai Xueren in Xi'an

Well worth a watch!

some comments online I've seen to accompany this:

"I don't think the documentary is a game changer, it is far behind 今风细雨江湖 which was made a decade ago. This one is also based on the idea of the "recluses", men with real combat skills, who keep on the authentic combat tradition and skills alive, either in the cities or countryside. There's a lot of truth to that, but I'm afraid that many of them are stuck in the same imaginery world of the efficiency of their system like many others. But everybody must have a dream I guess.

--
Professor Ma Mingda is not very amused when the documentary turned out like that, especially when his quotes and speeches "lead" the progression of the whole series. The whole thing still evolves around the "mysterious" aspects of TCMA "yet to be discovered", and from this point of view, the production crew sort of expect to "justify" the humility TCMA has faced in the past few years. A lot of the practitioners in this series have literally zero full-contact experience."

" use performance to represent/replace competition
means for all types of performance, we use a gymnastic scoring method...take away highest score, take away lowest score
then we call it competition
its core nature is a dance form... its martial arts mimic dance performance
the reason why our chinese martial art is in such a awkward and embarrassing circumstance
is because our martial art is clearly on the path of dance..."
- Ma MingDa

its a smart and logical retort
and its this kind of cleverness that made ppl miss the subtle intricacies,
made common-sensical connection without understanding the underlying oriental principles,
that come to a conclusion that is utterly absurd.
... like using western philosophical ideas to interpret and understand
CMA
then expound and spread it to cause more and more stupidity and mistake

Strange, just so you understand. The series is misrepresenting many things deliberately and creating a narrative of "excuses" once again.

I was talking to Ma Mingda's son yesterday about it, and yes, he is very upset and feels the same way.

The "online commentators" you mention are not simpletons who are pulling this out of thin air by the way.

Many Tongbei school high hands. It’s a good try.
Zhang Jianjun, Shi Jianyi, Ma Lingda~ Wow

Just to clarify, the Japanese infuse spear skill in sword for a long time.
If there is uniqueness of Miao Dao it’s infusion of Biangan whipping staff and footwork 激攪步
And body work 身法 such as 藏頭勢

What are the misrepresentations and excuses that caused the upset?
Pray tell.
I'm a bit too old to accept the conclusions of others without knowing the details
also, if you know what i mean: i know there are good women drivers. so far i am keeping the faith

as for me, with the current "situation" that cma is in now,
if we/someone does not come up with a way to make cma effective and mainstream,
all is essentially just talk.

We can only work on our skills.
I do believe expose to variety of martial arts, or exchanges skills.
However, knowing the essence of one’s school and make it shine is a personal goal for me.

This is a very interesting video!
Leaves me baffled at why got upset when the xinyyi practitioner said opponent using sanda, when he was using shaolin.
Means if xy practitioner said he was using shaolin it is better for him?... More accurate embarrassment with more conplete expose?

Or he's upset cos he doing sanda now?
...but at that time, he reported himself as a shaolin practitioner, right?

To be clear: in light sparring, when using lessened force, it does not mean that your alertness and caution is also reduced. You must know how to respond if your opponent becomes aggressive.

If you do not know such corresponding response, it is no use blaming the opponent.

My teacher said to be very careful when ppl mention light sparring; one school's light sparring, can be v different from another's

This is Zhang Feipeng. I think it’s either 扭絲棍 2 or 天歧棍 2 not Femgmogun
Zhang’s family probably inherited most of Ma Fengtu skill, including Chinese medicine.
Not many know Ma Fengtu was famous Chinese medicine practitioners 張錫純 student, author of 衷中參西錄.
The move of Sabre one, not two is what I was taught as well. But it’s used like spear, only one beat.

The series are just like another series of Kungfu movies. They showed the fun part of CMA training but skipped the hard, dry parts of basic training, and left people with illusions. Chinese Government had gotten most of the famous martial artist to film their skills in the 60s and kept those in the Military Museum. It is quite obvious that the Chinese Government is not interested in promoting the traditional arts. The social media is highly regulated in China. The social media can only make their productions in line with the Government Directives. Some people are still trying to preserve the art but general focus of the public is changed. “未习拳,先站三年桩” (Do horse stand for three years before learning the fists) is a joke nowadays. I think most of us know what we can do without spending several years' hardwork on horse stand.
