the whole body is the hand

My teacher at 82, the way/method we used to test things out with.
Not demo, just a clip of everyday practice

In taiji it's said the whole body is the hand....maybe a little different method than whats commonly seen.

Thank you for sharing. I really liked this video. Teacher Zhang had some real good skills. Tingjin and evasion, following and adapting. And that flexibility and softness at 82 years of age. I really like his dynamic style and vitality in movement.

In think that a big part of 'the whole body is a fist' has to do with that the internal arts use whole body coordination, that the whole body is used synchronized as a whole. Synchronized in movement, every part of the body can express the same amount of strength, or rather "Jin".

Don't remember if you have explained Zhang's background. What teacher or teachers did he study with? Would be interesting to hear more about it. :)

He was very private in his teaching, never allowing much information about him to be openly shared.
Known in Beijing as I understand it, by many of old-timers in the martial arts community.
They also respected his wishes to remain private.

A lot of the things he was noted for would be questioned by many viewing from the outside.

Some know who his teacher was.

Most including myself due not because of the conditions his teacher placed on him accepting him as a student

"1. tell no one that I am your teacher.
2. do not practice other things. If you do I will know.
3. do not push with anyone for 3 years."

More about his history for those interested can be found here
