Steppe people in rural areas today (Mongolia, Kazakistan, etc) learn the village art that has been passed on but it is only when they reach the urban areas, they realize that certain "styles" (categarizatio comes into being) become pronounced so they contine, or are chosen for (if interested) or show an inclincation so they learn to adapt, counter, integrate, etc other styles they may come upon in competition.

Love these videos from Mongolia - and the training clips here were really nice to see. An interesting subject this one too.

Wayne - folk style is what they do in the US. In colleges:

No, Tom. Freestyle is different again.

"Freestyle wrestling is a style of martial art wrestling. Along with Greco-Roman, it is one of the two styles of wrestling contested in the Olympic Games. American high school and men's college wrestling is conducted under different rules and is termed scholastic and collegiate wrestling. American collegiate women's wrestling is conducted under freestyle rules"

"Collegiate wrestling (also known as folkstyle wrestling) is the form of wrestling practiced mainly by men at the college and university level in the United States. "

Popular MMA fighter Ben Askren is a famous for winning trophies in folkstyle and also freestyle for example. He does the wrestling that Americans do in college, i.e. a distinct "folkstyle" to the traditional folk wrestling styles, like Lancashire or Cornish wrestling.

Wayne, You can dream she's the hero of an obscure western style of folk wrestling if you like :) but I'm going to assume she's effectively saying she did wrestling in high school/college/whateverthoseamericanscallit.

Folk wrestling and folkstyle wresting are different things. This, presumably, is the reason for using different words in naming them.

Love how quickly discussions devolve into terminology nitpicking on the InterWebz ;) A simple Google reveals that Ariela was on her varsity wrestling team, so in all probability she meant US collegiate wrestling.

Will leave it to our other forum members as to whether that should be called folk-, free- or something else entirely!

Excerpt from "Scholastic wrestling:"

Wikipedia wrote:Scholastic wrestling, sometimes known in the United States as folkstyle wrestling, is a style of amateur wrestling practiced at the high school and middle school levels in the United States. This wrestling style is essentially collegiate wrestling with some slight modifications. It is practiced in 49 of the 50 states in the United States. When practiced by wrestling clubs of younger participants, scholastic wrestling is better known as "folkstyle".

The only reason I mentioned it was because she said it in the clip
I had never heard the term before
Two of my closest cousins were Australian Greco Roman champions
I worked with George Barns who taught me a lot about professional wrestling
The place I taught tai chi was run by Demro Morgan the son of the great wrestler Hal Morgan
Because of that background I found the clip quite interesting
