Meeting with Power -Yang Sau Cheung

Postby cloudz on Thu Mar 31, 2022 3:49 am

This is the one that sucked me in, now I'm a follower :D
He comes across and talks really well, seems down to earth and genuine
nice also that he mentions a full contact background I think.

Interesting he talks about "kong jin"

what often happens when someone meets others of high level abilities....

To bad no clips of the encounters...

My question to all

If there were clips of the encounters, similar to other clips by other teachers...

Would you label them as. " fake"

What Your Yang Tai Chi Instructor Cannot Teach You

rather think it depends on level of the teacher and ability....it does take a while before one starts to "get it"
more time to develop "it".

He talked about the classics... :)

At one time bringing a English, Chinese book on the classics to my teacher he laughed.

Mentioning that some of the things written we're not quite correct, and that if one followed it it would tend to lead you astray.

The way to practice was directly through practice with somebody of ability..

Interesting. But.... "It's really about how you practice the solo form"

I have enjoyed the clips
However I would like to know more of his background
He seems to say he got it all from 3 lessons from YSC when he was in his 20’s
He then stopped practicing in his 30’s
I have yet to see any of YSC students who have any real skill
Can anyone point me to ones that do
I trained with two teachers who trained with YCF and after his death were made to follow YSC
Neither seemed happy about it
Does anyone know who his first teacher was

Hi Wayne, I'm up to about episode 6-7.

He was with Chu Gin Soon in Boston, so he was a Yang family student (at least) and that's how he got in the the Yang 'HQ', let's say. Chu was a disciple, second only to Ip Tai Tak in terms of seniority from what I know of those matters.

He mentions John Conroy a fair few times, sounds like they trained together a lot. I think Conroy was/is one of the 'seniors' from that school, at least I have heard him recognised by a few people, including Jim Uglow in UK (through the website).

He does talk about his experience in that school a fair few times as the series goes along.

John Conroy was the top student, sons aside, of the late Gin Soon Chu. He used to accompany GSC on his workshops in London, at Jim's school. I believe Jim and John now train with Mary Yang.

TBH as far as the subject of the OP goes, there's been a huge amount of talk by him so far, but little else. There are murmurs about him from some quarters but as I no longer really mix in those circles I don't have the full skinny.
Cheers.

What is it that is good about this? Not really much in the sense of useful or new information and he's not presenting it very well.

I really like the personal retelling of his story, and i think these episodes are more about giving the background, overview and framework of what he would like to share and why.

The personal accounts and interactions with this important figure in Yang family for me is pretty cool. Don't know whet to tell you man - sure there's lot's of stuff that isn't anything new, but at the same time it's a system of training I'm looking forward to learning more about. Often it's a personal thing or moment where and when you find inspiration here and there.. that was a mouthful.. let's see where it leads me.

I need a bit of a re fresh as I've been doing a kind of hybrid chen pan ling/ wu style for what feels like long enough now. And quite fancy returning to the Yang style ,which also has a tie in. In that the form came from Taiwan through He Jing Han better known for his Bagua via Alex Kozma, this was before the days the YSC form video was made public. There was a bit of a disconnect in those days in regards the family kind of standard and HJH was as I recall part of that Taiwan movement to have this film released - in itself a controversial thing at the time. The form itself caused a bit of a stir back then too.

The kind of way HJH did Yang was closer to YSC's style than the official or typical family standard at the time. So anyway, his idea of using YSC form as a standard and to get the kind of corrections this mans experience may serve up is too appealing right now for me to pass up. I'll plod through it and see what comes. I'll also probably try getting some practice partners on that fb page if there are any in my neighbourhood. The dynamic pushing method is the 'big deal' so to speak and I want to experience for myself what a dedicated practice to it produces. The so called 'rebounding' force.. I think that practice in particular differentiates the family system from most other Yang styles and derivatives anyway.

It's a skill I have heard called 'mountains echo' elsewhere in the internal MA world, and it calls to me. :)

Well I watched the whole video after leaving that comment pretty early in.

I'm skeptical for a number of reasons.

I subscribed and joined the Facebook group, though, always looking for perspectives.

indeed, re. perspectives
As he mentions Yang style is 'developmental' and was taught individually, so to speak.

I'm curious now about your scepticism, you don't find him genuine or something like that?
Or was it the odd experiences he talks about.

Nothing wrong with sharing any concerns, I would think.
The Boston group and NY offshoot is somewhat infamous for some controversial videos.

Now there's a fascinating subject.
*opens a juicy can of worms* ;D
