A lot of people just stick with what their teacher taught them in the 70s/80s/90s and never learn anything new or change - weird, eh?

yes.

I don't know if you've read 12 rules by Jordon Peterson.
But he explains incredibly well why things MUST change
Everything has to, to survive, to improve, to keep up, be fit for the times.

He explains it in a way that's pretty deep and profound.
Let's also not forget how the culture in China was deeply repressed by an awful system of rule..
So it was already 'dead' for a long while by the 70's..

There's this cool story from the ancient Egyptian Gods that warns us of this.
The son has to gives one of his eyes to the father, who loses his in defeat.
Essentially 'defeated' by the chaos of change, losing an eye in the process (ability to see this truth).
No doubt I've butchered that, but hopefully kept the gist.
