In part 1 of my interview with Benny “The Jet” Urquidez, we discuss the craziest fight he’s been involved in. It was an underground fight, what I call the Real Kumite in Hong Kong. Here the amazing details of this secret match where the opponent proclaimed it's a "fight to the death", and what happened in the aftermath!

Benny “The Jet” Urquidez and the Hong Kong Death Match

In 1981, Benny “The Jet” was in Hong Kong with a dozen other US and Canadian kick-boxers to fight exhibition bouts against Chinese fighters. The show was not being televised. The troupe appeared live on Hong Kong Television the night before the event. A young fighter, Kong Fu Tak, stands up in the audience and shouts that Benny “The Jet” was an actor, not a true fighter and challenged him to a Death Match for the following night, right there on live television. Benny had just come off of filming his first film, Force-Five, and he was publicizing that film as well as the upcoming exhibition bouts for the following evening.

A Death Match is the following; there is no title put up. There is no weigh-in because the fighters don’t have to make weight. The Challenger doesn’t have to even be a recognized fighter as long as the person being challenged agrees. There is generally a substantial bump in fee for the Challenger to accept; which was true in this case. There are no Referee’s instructions and no rules, anything goes. The announcer merely introduces the fighters and they fight. There is a Center Referee, but there are no judge’s score cards. No points can be taken away, because the bout is not being scored. A doctor cannot stop a fight; the injured fighter has to agree to stop. These are open-ended rounds, which mean that the fight continues until one fighter can’t.

The film you are about to see is not broadcast quality. It was shot from the stands with a hand-held VHS camera. There were no cell phones. You will see all four rounds. This fight has never been seen since its original filming in 1981. This year of 2017 makes it 36 years. Even Benny “The Jet” hadn’t seen the film until this year. Like all treasures, it was discovered when his former Manager, Stuart Sobel, found the tape recently, which was buried in some files.

This fighter, Kong Fu Tak, lost the bout with a TKKO (Technical Kick Knock Out) in the fourth round. What you don’t see is this fighter was taken to the hospital after the fight. He spent some time recovering from facial injuries which are visible in the fight. You will also note that this fight took place on a platform with no ropes. It was done Chinese style Smoker; ie, a private bout not intended for the general public.

Kong Fu Tak was a very strong, talented and determ ined fighter. He never went down during the bout. But he couldn’t continue after the fourth round. Although” The Jet” made many subsequent trips to Hong Kong, after that night he never saw or heard of him again.

First Death Match I have seen with boxing gloves
Don't put power into the form let it naturally arise from the form

Kong Fu Tak (江富德) was one of the three best kickboxers in HK back in the 1980s. He actually trained in the U.K. under Steve Morris in the late 1970s and competed there as well.

Hmm, the only times I've seen deaths in fights were when the opponents were wearing gloves.

But, I'm sure Urquidez didn't expect to kill or be killed. He had sympathy for the guy. Besides, it was the doctors who stopped the fight to prevent further injury to his opponent.

Afa the fight, the guy was game; but Benny likes to fight.
