Tim Cartmell Bagua and Xingyi forms

Postby Fubo on Tue Nov 08, 2022 2:13 pm

Some forms from Tim. I appreciate the fact that most of the material you see of Tim online are applications or rolling/sparring clips as they show the results for his training, but it's nice to see Tim show his expression of solo forms too.

I watched it yesterday, but it's set to private, today. Craig leaked the goodies and ruined it for everyone... ;D

Hi Konn,

It looks like it's unavailable now. I remember the clip was titled a "private lesson" with Tim showing Sun style Bagua forms and Xing Yi 5 fists, so I'm guessing the student may not have had permission to post it. Sorry mate, but here's a short promo clip of a Bagua seminar from the same school that posted the pervious video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-tslBiQZkc

I saw the video. Send me money and I'll tell you what I saw. No questions asked. What you do with the information is you own business.

Namaste.

In all fairness to Tim Cartmell, he is an excellent technician, whose primary interest has clearly long been focused on martial applications, especially for competitive fighting both with IMA styles and with BJJ, not on form set performance.

As such, there may be other practitioners who demonstrate better looking form set performances, but who probably wouldn't fare very well against him as a competitive fighter.

It's all relative to personal goals and interests. Those who can display equally high levels of capability in both forms and fighting are usually the rare exception rather than the norm. Just saying.

It’s not that it wasn’t beautiful
It looked like it was learnt from a book
If he’s so good at BJJ just teach that
No need to claim expertise in Hsing I

Tim spent a significant amount of time studying Xingyi in not only Taiwan, gaining a black belt under Xu Hon Ji in the TST system, but also as a live in student of Liang Ke Quan, and Mao Mingchun from the Li Gui Chang lineage... I feel like he deserves the benefit of doubt, and that he's doing what he's doing for specific reasons, and not due to lack of experience (having studied with some of the greats, and having competed and won full contact competitions, not many people can match his experience, both in terms of his exposer to different teachers but also his achievements). Considering how different the Hei Bei Xing Yi in Taiwan, and Shanxi Xing Yi in the Li Gui Chang lineage can appear, depending on what one is used to seeing, expressions that don't fit our expectations can sometimes seem "wrong" or "lacking" in quality. I've been around enough quality teachers and practitioners who practice differently to know that I may not fully understand why they do, what they do, until spending some time with them in person, and to not be so quick to judge.

He claims to have trained with master HSU in 1984
Thé master died in April of that year and was sick before
I don’t know of any of his other claims but that one is a little shakey
TST is my first love and I did not see any evidence of it in the clip presented
