can you give us some TL;DW? like, were they really big, sober guys just easily handling smaller, drunk guys? any other context? have no idea if those are "fights".

again have no idea if those are "fights". or what is a "fight". back in the day (mostly before my time), guess you could have a "fist fight" then be good friends afterward. now, with road rage, stabbings, school shootings, and what-not, who knows.

here's some old guys fighting. maybe this counts? they're not going to pull out the jits and wrestling, it seems like


i saw two less-old guys fight in NYC once over some argument about where the garbage was placed. one guy punched the other guy and walked away yelling. the other guy was still yelling. end of fight. no "ground" at all. not sure if that counts, either.

There's a lot more headshots and broken knuckles these days than there were before we started wearing gloves in boxing matches. The stances changed as well.

As far as most brawls, in the US at least, I think they're a lot more tame than they were in the old days of fishhooks ad eye gouges being commonplace. A lot more sizzle than steak, mainly posturing.

yikes those fights were a lot dirtier back in the day?

I get the impression (er.... from movies ...) people used to have "fist fights", then when someone got knocked down, everyone kind of agrees "ok that's that". bjj seeping into the popular culture and helicopter parenting, and the gun-craziness (in the usa) and people getting used to the idea of unhinged crazy people seems to have changed that.

if you go back farther, it just gets worse.

the "trial by combat" (let the Gods decide who's guilty) ends if you are literally maimed, castrated, and cannot move. and your horse is also maimed or dead. then as the loser, you are hanged in public as the "justice".

if you watch a few minutes of the medieval fight video, that starts to not sound so bad ... but you can sort of see how the terribly violent and "legitimate duel" fighting passed down through the years and got less horrible at some point.
