CMA in Japan - with young(er) Su Dong-chen

Postby Andy_S on Wed Dec 31, 2008 12:48 pm

Just found this: Short, but thought it might be of interest.

I really like Su's XingI...to my untutored eye, looks rather Xinyi-ish.

Yes. The Japanese guy performing Baji in the video is Matsuda Ryuchi. He first came to Taiwan in the early 70s to study the art under Liu Yun-Chiao and was one of the few pionners who introduced traditional CMA to Japan during that era.

Some of that was extraordinairy. I stagger to think at what level Chen's "Essensce of Change" may exist. Then again, if what another poster here said is true- that he considers Sakuraba an "exceptional fighter"- maybe I would be disappointed. Though, possibly, the diffference between what one says and what one believes may be considerable- I feel this is the case with alot of the Hong Yi Xiang lineage. Though I would speculate that what he may have said has more to do with etiquette than others who, sadly, are more concerned with marketing.

Still, a very nice clip.

By virtually any standard, Saku IS an exceptional fighter. Why would Su's statement re this lead to your disappointment?

Su is a very rare beast: An IMA guy who can and does fight. The facts that:
(1) He does not believe in Qi; and
(2) He praises MMA fighters
Lends credence to his alleged good sense and combative abilities, IHMO.

I would be interested to hear who Su has been fighting recently, since we hear that he fights, but never see any specific stuff regarding who he actually fights, or did in the past.
Thats not to say that I don't believe he fights or has fought, I'm just interested in knowing some more information about it.

Mix:

Seconded - all is anecdotal (much of it from EF). I'd be surprised if he is still the hellraiser he used to be, though; he is no spring chicken.

But even if he had not had a ruck in his LIFE - I would still train with him, just having seen the way he moves and disposes of trainees on vid.

This is the xingyi jin tui lian huan form and a bit of bagua. Looks more traditional here.
