We must distinguish between parry and block
A parry is a backward movement done with the flat
A block is force to force done with the edge
We must also distinguish between training and fighting
In FMA we often use the flat in two man training
One that comes to mind is peleece/peleece
That is to preserve the weapon
In combat however it makes sense to use the strongest and quickest technique
To use the flat requires a weak turning of the wrist
I liked the clip but he did seem to contradict himself at times

I think it helps to watch him wield a blade

"Training vs fighting" is true. The big difference is that the opponent is really trying to kill you, and vice versa. Then, there's the matter of the weapon. Two jians, or two daos, against each other or other weapons, will (imo) make a huge difference in what technique will be best. Chips don't stop blades from cutting. But, if you know your blade is weaker (physically) than your opponent's, you'll want to be more careful. Otoh, if one has a stronger blade/edge, designing specific techniques for taking advantage of that quality makes sense.

I believe if more people sparred with less safety equipment and live steel blades, a lot of these controversies would clear themselves in short order. (And yes, it can be done relatively safely, it just removes the confusion of things being *too* safe.)

Yes brave men in padding won’t always act the same with a live blade
Heaven and Hell both exist under the blade of the sword

I think the full fight is a little less impressive than the nicely edited video highlights, but good on him for risking the brain damage.

He did pretty good, facing such an elite and highly trained and conditioned opponent.

Very funny! :D
it made me slap my knee and laugh for a bit.

Their "elite" conditioning and movement is exactly why I didn't watch the full fight.
Though, I did not find them "Impressive" enough to watch the full fight
I did find the video interesting enough to post
and thought others might find it interesting too.

If I miss a game or whatever
I watch ESPN
And, just watch the highlights

If the highlights move me
Then, I'll search for more

Finally saw the full fight!
It was Way Way better than I expected!
I smiled from beginning to end

Mantis Guy tried to use what he practices
Their conditioning was hilariously an issue
But the fight was action filled entertainment
Ended in a KO
6 min--Perfect

And, big props to Mantis Guy for holding back
When Big Country gave up his back

He Could of hurt that kid Bad
