The following is an excerpt from [The direction that Chinese art should go]
Liu Yunqiao, the sage of Bajimen, wrote it in the 1980s
The purpose of citation is to discuss culture and inheritance, not for any form of political use

There is an old saying in China: Wen can stabilize the country, and martial arts can stabilize the country, which fully affirms the efficacy of practicing literature and martial arts. At the beginning, it can enlighten children, straighten their minds and cultivate their morality, and achieve great success. The small ones can kill thieves and calm chaos, protect the village, and the big ones can stabilize the country and benefit millions of people. This is the ultimate goal of China's 5,000-year history, which requires the integration of civil and military education. However, what does martial arts look like today? Although I can't worry and be angry day and night, and I don't want to criticize wantonly here, I can't be too silent. Just look at the martial arts that are popular at home and abroad, which are rough, vulgar, vulgar, superficial, dance, and model, but in the situation where the whole martial arts field is filled with fake ones and fake ones, can it not make people worry?

With the advancement of science and technology, the meaning and function of martial arts in agricultural society is different from that in modern society, but it is still the best way to cultivate the body and mind. It can turn a person from weak to strong, and then become rational and enlightened. This kind of cultivation method, as long as a person, no matter which dynasty or society they live in, they all desire and need it.

In fact, the seniors who have achieved success in practicing martial arts can all realize that if they want to gain the Tao, it is the most practical and effective way to start from the foundation of "Wu" and also cultivate "Wen" skills. This is why ancient times attached so much importance to both civil and military training. However, it is a pity that in the past few hundred years, the regimes of the past dynasties have not only belittled and abandoned the cultivation of "martial arts", but also reduced the aspect of "literature" to false and unrealistic rhetoric. Is it sad? Wang Yangming of the Ming Dynasty advocated "unity of knowledge and action", which influenced the contemporary world. In his biography and study records, he repeatedly emphasized the skill of "quietness", and believed that learning and conduct should start with calmness; and "achieving tranquility" is the best way to deal with distracted thoughts. He is able to rely on this, so his writing and martial arts are outstanding for a generation and will last forever.

In martial arts training, "stillness, stillness" is the most basic and consistent requirement. In the Four Books [University], it is clearly stated at the beginning: "...you can be calm after you know it, you can be calm after you are calm, and you can be peaceful after you are quiet...". However, in today's general literati, where should they start with the kung fu of stopping, samadhi, and stillness? What is the boundary inside? I'm afraid nine out of ten may not be able to understand. Read the book "University" in this way, then it is it, and you are you. Did half of the principles in the book enter your mind and cause changes? The ancients paid attention to "learning, asking, thinking, and distinguishing" in reading, but also "doing it earnestly".

From the point of view of the introductory training of martial arts, as a teacher to teach his disciples, he should first practice the fixed posture and stance at the beginning. There should be no tension in the slightest, what you want is a time of "quietness" in the middle of concentration. After a long period of time, the skill is deep, and the tranquility is constant, and then you can gradually be at ease in the changes; only when you can be peaceful and quiet can you talk about the word "Kung Fu", you can think about it, and you can achieve it. Therefore, in the eyes of experts, the work of "stopping, samadhi, tranquility, tranquility, consideration, and acquisition" in [University] is by no means empty talk of some knowledge, but the "homework" of actual practice sooner or later.

After the foundation of this step of kung fu has been established, the teacher will require the students to seek tranquility at all times during the movement of moves and changes in energy. This is called "seeking tranquility while moving". During the static and static step in front, although the mind does not have a quiet mind, it requires the "movement" of the energy mechanism, which is called "seeking movement in stillness". The ancient Daoyin technique uses the mind to guide the qi and travels all over the body, which is also a method of cultivation.

In terms of "seeking tranquility while moving", [Baguazhang] Most people only know that "turning in circles" is a symbol of practicing Baguazhang, but what is the use of turning in circles? To put it bluntly, it is nothing more than being able to relax physically and mentally and peacefully while constantly circling around, and then "seeking movement in stillness" to achieve concentration without chaos. Otherwise, once fighting the enemy, the blood rushes to the head, the face becomes red, the neck is thick, and the heart is about to jump out of the cavity; Total ignorance! Both sides are excited, fighting desperately with passion, there is no half point measurement, the victory or defeat depends entirely on physical fitness, and has nothing to do with the past training methods, fighting methods and fighting methods.

[Taijiquan Jing] has the idea that "the shape is like a falcon fighting a rabbit, and the spirit is like a cat catching a mouse". Just imagine, when a falcon, a cat, is a fierce and sensitive animal, when it is peeping and preying, the moment Isn't the power of a sudden lightning strike the standard required for fighting? In the midst of extreme motion, there is still clarity and calmness like radar, isn't it just the mental state of a falcon or a cat? Accurately speaking, in today's martial arts competitions, the kind of cuddling and messing around is really unbearable, even worse than falcons and cats.

Therefore, in martial arts training, the work of "seeking stillness in motion, seeking movement in stillness" is indispensable, and it is an interactive practice, one and inseparable. In the movement, the change of moves, without calmness of heart, will not have a high degree of lethality; without the use of vigor, only the dancing of hands and feet, then it will become a "model martial art" or "dance", flamboyant fists and legs, not worthy of recognition smile. In stillness, the training and mobilization of the Qi-seeking machine still needs to be done on the premise of a quiet mind, so that the body can be healthy and come about naturally. Seeing people who seek to make money and become famous nowadays, they often advocate a certain "Qigong" to be quick, from a few months, a few days, to immediately responding, this is really a ridiculous thing in the world. This kind of person, whether it is out of ignorance or striving for profit, is actually a sinner in Chinese martial arts.

In the real Chinese martial arts, the effort of seeking tranquility is what Mencius meant by "moving the heart and forbearance, and gaining what is impossible"; it is consistent with the principle of "I am good at cultivating my noble spirit". Regardless of whether it is nourishing the heart or refining qi, this is what the sages and sages have passed on in China for five thousand years. Talk about orthodoxy, talk about authenticity, who else is better?

This step of kung fu, coupled with the fusion of boxing and righteousness, no matter whether it is developed in the aspect of "martial arts" or "literature", will naturally form a person's momentum, courage or integrity. For example, in terms of righteousness, those who cultivate loyal thoughts naturally have a heroic aura, such as Guan Gong, a martial sage; Li Bai; the heroic spirit, such as Xiang Yu, the overlord of Chu; Although these heroes who have been famous for future generations in history are not famous for their achievements in martial arts, in fact, their martial arts and literary talents are all rooted in the training of martial arts, so that they can be majestic and powerful. I have left an immortal example in history.

Although it is not necessary for every martial artist to have these achievements, the minimum principle and the big goal cannot be missed. Chinese philosophy emphasizes that "from the emperor to the common people, self-cultivation is the foundation", which can be said to be universal and undeniable. The question is why do you want to cultivate yourself?

Gentlemen, Chinese culture pays attention to the unity of man and nature, and believes that it is an extremely high state. In martial arts practice, there are laws to follow, and it is not mysterious at all (very scientific). In martial arts, it is people-oriented. A person's identity is divided into head, body, and legs, which are three sets of heaven, earth and man. The upper panel absorbs the natural air, the lower panel selects the aura of geography, and the middle panel preserves the original vitality of the people, which is the connection between heaven, earth and people. Therefore, between the heaven and the earth in life, every breath and breath is always connected with the sky and the earth; every movement and stillness is always in harmony with the sky and the earth. A person who has a deep understanding of martial arts and profound attainments, "understands the inter-existence relationship between human beings and all things in the world, so that they can benefit from it and not suffer from it; they can absorb the benefits of all things in the world and avoid their harm." ".

Therefore, Chinese martial arts have the skill of surpassing the world and participating in the transformation of all things. The so-called lofty ideals of the ancients and the praise of things will not be reduced to high-profile, but can indeed be achieved step by step and step by step. The reason why China advocates "integration of civil and martial arts" is an education that emphasizes both theory and practice. Only on this foundation can it be implemented. Looking at the past dynasties, those who only focus on theories and do not cultivate their minds and spirits often talk in empty words. This phenomenon still exists today!

Therefore, martial arts include Confucianism, Taoist spirit, and Buddhist cultivation. A profound martial art must have a complete training method. Starting from the standing posture, the adjustment of physiology, the cultivation of the heart, the cultivation of blood, the movement and transformation of strength, the application of boxing equipment, and even the strategy of war, etc., can be regarded as complete. Although the characteristics of each sect and school are different, they pay attention to the training of mind and energy; the cultivation of momentum and realm should be the same. And only when both theory and practice, silent comprehension and cultivation are paid equal attention to, this kind of martial arts education is more likely to produce a man of integrity who is unyielding in power, unyielding in poverty, unyielding in riches and honor, and has integrity. Now that we want to revive Chinese culture and stabilize the country, there is probably no other way except for the education of martial arts!
