Give u a big fail on that one Rob
Try it without independent arm action in the attacking arm
Selective tension would be keeping tension in the hand holding the coffee while using the rest of the body
That is what we call folding
Don't put power into the form let it naturally arise from the form

Nice as usual, Rob. I like the bit about doing everything like you are just buttering bread ;D

It's interesting to note that Sean Strickland just won the UFC middleweight title while not having any discernible stance, in stark contrast to his opponent who is very stance based.

Interesting demo.. :)

With your past training in taiji...
Do you see any connection / similarities with the concept of open and close ?

I know you said u weren’t going to use stances
What you are doing is just using independent action of the hitting arm
No legs waist hips lats
All the things that are part of a punch
I’m too ugly to film but you should get what I mean

Don't worry wayne, you can always hire Tim Curry to star in your videos, like our dear friend RobP3.

Taking a stance is not about bringing tension to the legs, you’ve obviously got that wrong.

And I don’t really understand why you would want to tense up when you block a punch. And even more so as you don’t want to take a stance. If you keep tension you will be top-heavy, unbalanced and your punch will lack strength.

But I do start to understand why you couldn’t embrace the spirit of Tai Chi and I see more clearly why Systema is not IMA.

@WW, what is shown here has absolutely nothing to with open/close. Zero.

I'd see more of a connection with that in wave movement, the opening/close of the chest, etc. In this particular example the body is working more in an isolated way - though hav ing said that nothing is ever truly isolated, of course. There's probably a bit of open/close going on in the short strike

Yes, I know. Because we can hit hard without using the stance. That's one of the points of the demo.
It's okay if you can't do it, it's not so easy.

Obviously lol.
It's only tensing the hand - and it would be more of a strike than a block. Lol, our punches do not lack strength
"Embrace the spirit of Tai Chi" lol, right, okay. Is Systema IMA? Who cares.
Can you show us how you do this particular challenge? I mean, if you can't do it, it's nothing to be ashamed of.

Okay I got to the "trick" and your idea of how to do it. Perfectly valid way to approach the "trick" of not spilling but I have to agree that it isn't the same kind of strike and it isn't the principle that Wayne is talking about that I am obviously getting wrong.

The coffee cup is a finger. I'm going to have to put another video together to show you the moon.
