Pankration

Ok, I've just started looking into Pankration

What's the difference between the rules of what they are doing and MMA? Is it the same as MMA?

Hi Graham
I'm not sure but I think there are less radical than mexican judo : http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.p ... xican+judo
From what I remembered there was no particular set of MMA rules every federation had it slightly different, I remember UFC started quite all allowed and ended up all forbidden.

Just remember, pankration does not rhyme with nation. It's closer to pan-crat-eon.
you probably knew that, but most of my fellow Americans do not.

No it is pronounced pan cray shun, where as the historical art was pa gray tee on, the distinction was on purpose to distinguish it from the historical art.

Here's some interesting clips that start to look a little different to MMA (ok, not that much different) but has some tips on how you pronounce it at least ;D

...and watching these two guys spar is very interesting - it's definitely different to look at here:

There's lots of long range strikes - like the CLF I do. I like that ;D

Interesting - I could see parallels with Vladimir's "old style" striking work in that second one.

It's interesting isn't it. Currently reading this book -

It's very good. It analyses pottery/stone carvings/statues of Pankration athletes and then has people showing the techniques (wearing clothes, thankfully). Good history section too. Strangely, I find that the throws I tend to use myself, that I developed through testing what actually works (in my own limited way of course) are pretty much all in this book. That's what drew my interest ;D Who needs CMA? ;D
