Is there really a difference between them?

Interesting question. I go between them depending on time of season, how I feel etc.... In the winter I practice a lot of Bagua, in the spring and summer I do a lot of Xingyi.

Graham: I think there are some differences, like Bagua works on an anjing level from the word go, which makes it considerably harder to learn well. :)

Bagua is the difficult... but I find it impossible to think of it as different, fundamentally, to XingYi. It just starts at a more difficult level, like you say.

the reason i asked is that your movement in this video looks a bit less polished compared to your recent xingyi videos. (IMHO)

Yeah, its because I was practicing xingyi for like three hours + every day over the holidays.
Whereas I didn't practice circle walking very much, so I lost some skill compared to where I was at in the summer. :)

Cool, thanks for sharing. Just one pet peeve I see here is not maintaining extension of the high hand in the dpc as you drop down for the snake motion.

Yeah, I saw that too.
I've got lots of work to do on all my changes.
I'm doing some pretty intense bagua practice right now, so I'll make a new clip in a week or so and hopefully it can be a big improvement like with the xingyi clips.

i just saw your XYC clip on you webSite..... 1st time I been there.

you do that for 3 hrs?

i believe you should just do SC drills for 3 hours a day instead.
you will see more results.

the old chinese saying "3 years of fist is not worth 1 years of SC."
if you workOut 3 hrs per day of SC it is worth 9 hrs of your XYC.

SC John: I also spar regularly and practice push hands and ground fighting, so its not like I just practice forms. Though when I made that video I had been practicing forms a lot. :)

mix, how much single action stuff do u do? Just curious because I never string together more than 3 moves at a time and its an interesting dichotomy of training

Thats pretty much how I train.
I take one move and drill the shit out of it. :)
I think thats why bagua and xingyi are designed how they are.

just make sure you do them correct.....
if you drill 5 thousand time of something incorrectly, you might be wasting your time.

RE: "James is from Guelph Ontario, where he teaches Cheng style Baguazhang and Hebei style Xingyiquan. "
since you are already a master you dont want to teach student wrong too.
it would be a shame wasting everyOne's time and money.....

come into the SC eclass, i think the drils will make your body connect better.
