We practice similar drills in our bagua system too. They build power, connectivity, and most importantly, how to deal with resistance using the whole body rather than localized strength. Usually we start off easy and gradually increase the power to the point where both sides use full force.

I'd like to see the stepping method. The way I heard it described it sounds a lot like Kumar's three step mud stepping. And in that Liu was much more well known for his Yin Fu and was said to have studied some with Ma Gui, I suspect that is it's origin.

Is that anything like the "3 step?" stepping method that the xie pie qi line does all of it's single movements with?

It's still a shame tho', it's great stuff and should be more available but it's her call and not for me to argue with. She's trying to sort out 2 trips a year to come over and see us, damn that would be sweeter than nuts man.
