push hands and shuai jiao

Can someone enlighten me as to the difference between Taiwanese Push Hands and Shuai Jiao? They look like the same thing to me.

Most of the PH in the first clip isn't from Taiwan but from mainland China. They are actually much better about incorporating the shuai-fa into their PH than we are here in Taiwan. But if I can help it, we here in Taiwan will be incorporating it very soon. :)

They look the same to you because you likely aren't doing either competitive PH nor shuaijiao. Am I right?

The addition of the jacket in shuaijiao adds a new element to the grappling. Without it, taiji PH players have to adapt their throws, entries, and reversals and counters. Second, the range of technique allowed in a SJ tourney is broader than found in PH. They are slightly different flavors of grappling.

I wrote more about shuai-fa in PH here:

Time to put the QUAN back in taijiQUAN. Time to put the YANG back in YANG style taiji.

I'd compare it to no-gi and gi grappling in BJJ/modern US grappling tournaments.

In Taiji, there is no gripping of the clothes: you embrace him, or use the natural hook above the elbow (which is why you see a lot of arm dragging). In SC, you have a jacket to grip onto.

Also, in SC I don't think there is/are points for running your man off the mats/leitei....? Hence the "pushing" in a lot of Taiji.
