I remember being so mesmerized by internal, in the 1980s and asking Tony Yang, over and over again, is baji internal, is it internal! His response was always don't worry just go and practice the basics [bajiquan/pigua zhang]. It was only much, much later that he pointed out, by example, how the bajiquan and pigua zhang that Liu taught embodied both internal and external training methods.
However, my 6th sense still tells me that Liu felt bagua was also essential to the training---not implying that he mixed baji and bagua but rather incorporated many aspects of the bagua training as part of the overall training required to reach higher levels of baji. Again, I am restating, that this is a personal view, not that of Tony Yang or any other Wu Tan teacher or brother [sister, too!].
