your theme breaks when i reduce my browser to 1024px instead full width of 1600+

usually you can click on item in a tag cloud. did you just put the terms in there as keywords?

i think drupal is better than wordpress for anything other than pure blogging. or you could check out concrete5 which is also a pretty cool, and straight forward CMS if you're not looking for too much in the way of power and flexibility.

why the gi's? just curious...

I scooped the wordpress free theme and used it for a basic layout...it's just a static html site.

the tag cloud looks at and displays words used to find the site. since there's no database to search through I made the links static text. I'll check the sizing - thanks!

2 reasons for the Gi's in class:

1> makes things more formal - I've always trained in sweats and a ratty tshirt and I've learned that it lends itself to 'socialization' in class with other students. I want these guys to understand that when you tie your belt your 'ready for action' which means STFU and train until the belt comes off after class.

2> we do a lot of grabs/take downs/throws which 'might' occasionally involve grabbing a sleeve rather than a limb. These are durable judo jackets which also adds a smidge more padding when landing. but mostly so no clothes get trashed during training.

Honestly, making these guys chuck a jacket on was the best thing I've ever integrated into teaching. Everyone wears a white belt although I am segregating groups of techniques into various levels, much like a Kyu ranking system in karate. They'll still get a huge mix of techniques and exercises but 70% of whatever they're working on will be aimed at 'that level'....the other 30% is extra stuff to mix it up a bit.

changed the container tag from 100% to 1200px.... no longer breaks when you alter window size.

i think uniforms are fine. we use them during basic exercise classes (but not conditioning) and i understand the reason for them, just wondering why you went with JMA style gi's.

your theme change gives useless horizontal scrolling though it no longer breaks. the sooner you switch to using some sort of CMS the more you'll thank me by next year or so. you seem techy enough you should be able to install one without too much trouble.

ohh.... and your clips are nice to look at also..... hope your new teaching foray brings you the success that you are after

get a bigger screen or set your pixel ratio above "I'm going blind" - I assume you're on 1024. Most of the screens I deal with are 1400+ because they're wider than tall these days. I'm only on a 15" square at home but it too is set to 1280 which I find comfortable. the screen width online is 1200.

what do I need a cms for? that's for guys that don't do HTML. Christ, it's only a 5 page site with some static content. the site was completed faster than I could have configured the cms.

i keep my screen set at full resolution (1680x10150) but i have it set to reduce to 1024 so i can make sure my designs work at that screen size. about 50% of users who visit your site will be viewing at that resolution, even if their monitors are capable of higher resolutions so you can't afford to discount half the traffic that will visit your site.

even though you only have 5 pages now, as you grow your site (which you probably will) the CMS will be the single best tool you can have at your disposal. it'll give you tremendous power and flexibility going into the future with a lot less headache. the more legacy your site acquires over time, the more time consuming the process will be down the line. let's say you want to add a .js application to your site 6 months from now (like shadowbox or something equally cool), you'd have to add that by hand to the <head> of every single page you want the application to run on. not too much work when you've only got 5 pages but what about when you get to 10 or 15. with a cms you just add the module and your done. takes about 2 minutes instead of 20, which really adds up over the life of a website.

I don't even know what a CMS is... but I can write HTML. Is it like CSS? What CMS do you use, Ashe?

Content Management System. Good for people that don't have things like Dreamweaver software and knowledge on how to put a website together...good for customers. Useful if you want to add text to a page and/or create new pages. Takes awhile to configure on a site, and if you've never used one before can take days upon days to get the hang of. It will not solve a sizing issue on the page (that Ashe had pointed out) - that's done by changing values in my stylesheets manually.

The only real thing in my site that might grow is the gallery. And all I have to do is upload the stuff - there's a script I wrote that detects new videos and embeds the links automatically, simply by uploading the swf files.

that's cool! what language did you write it in?

anyway, i can write HTML til the cows come home, and i have dreamweaver, but i still find the CMS to be an amazingly powerful tool. if you were to develop a site to the extent of something like performancenutrition.com, which has 15000+ pages, you'd go insane trying to manage that kind of content with only dreamweaver.

actually about the only thing i use dreamweaver for is as an ftp client and a supercharged word processor for marking up CSS.

fallingleaveskungfu.com is getting up to maybe 100 pages including blog posts and even that is a lot easier to manage with a CMS.

for instance, i recently added a block to all my blog posts that included some keywords (like phoenix and martial arts) to help people find my site (an important goal que no?) which would have been a pain to do manually.

ed- we mostly use drupal. it's open source and has a HUGE community of developers behind it, but we also use concrete5 and joomla on occasion.

place this anywhere on the page:
Code: Select all
function getFileList($dir) {

    # array to hold return value
   $retval = array();
   # add trailing slash if missing
   if(substr($dir, -1) != "/") $dir .= "/";
   # open pointer to directory and read list of files
   $d = @dir($dir) or die("getFileList: Failed opening directory $dir for reading");
   while(false !== ($entry = $d->read())) {
    # skip hidden files
   if($entry[0] == ".")
      continue;
   if(is_dir("$dir$entry")) {
      $retval[] = array( "name" => "$entry/", "path" => filetype("$dir$entry"), "size" => 0, "lastmod" => filemtime("$dir$entry") );
    } elseif(is_readable("$dir$entry")) {
      $retval[] = array( "name" => "$entry", "path" => "$dir$entry", "size" => filesize("$dir$entry"), "lastmod" =>             filemtime("$dir$entry") );
    }
   }
   $d->close();
   return $retval;
}

place this where you want your menu of items:
Code: Select all
$dirlist = getFileList("./swf/");

foreach($dirlist as $file) {
   if(strpos($file['name'],"/")==0){
      $popName=str_replace("_"," ",$file['name']);
      $popName=str_replace(".swf","",$popName);
      $filename=str_replace(".swf","",$file['name']);
echo "<p><a href=\"#\" onclick=\"javascript:document.getElementById('tvScreen').src='embedded-video.php?video={$filename}'\">{$popName}</a></p>";
      //echo "<a href=\"javascript:viewImage('{$popName}')\"><img src=\"{$file['path']}\" border=\"0\"/></a>\n";
    }
}

I used underscores as spaces and just did a replace function so it doesn't show 'da_mang_fan_shen' in the page. I also didn't want to pass '.swf' to the player - I want to control that.
