You're idea isn't too far-fetched, Bob. Maybe he got his inspiration from Ma Yuehliang.

The umbrella form was nothing more than the standard jian form done with an umbrella instead of a sword.

This is quite different from YSC's Chang Quan. A few postures look slightly similar, but there looks like a lot of personal modifications going on. The YSC Chang Quan is also longer, but maybe this is just a section of what he does.
