He has seen the forms, and he understands how the 'look' of them works. But I am not so sure if he goes beyond that.

For example, the first application, the beng in grappling?. He uses the posture of beng quan, but there's no 'beng jin' manifested.

It is not uncommon, though. Many people that train 'external' arts feel comfortable to train Xingyiquan, for example, and to apply the forms as they see it, and they don't go further to study the mechanics of direction and power issuing inside the form.

Beng Jin is a penetrating force in a forward, straight direction.

Im always wary of people who say the element, as opposed to the action (wood vs pound/beng/smash).

The clips didnt show the action, IMO. just the shape of things.

On the vids, I'm not even a major Xingyi guy (cross train in it a little here and there) but I thought the second clip was extremely suspect as well. Jeez man, the guy creates a two man drill where you set up a pao quan (almost textbook pao quan set up) and then instead break it into two steps and call the second step "beng".

That clip should help highlight a bit how there is no beng energy. His footwork, set up and angles are all pao quan but then he makes a one step counter into two steps and calls it beng. Why not just pao of the haymaker?

After taking the time to watch his 5 element application I withdraw my former statements. Interesting to see different ideas on applications of the fists, but really there's nothing there. Structure and awareness are obviously way off in the five elements clip.
