Nice thought re. shoulder... come to think of it, I've been doing that instinctively. But I don't like the head idea -- i.e. the way he does it, sticking his chin/face forward. It creates an opening for a nice punch, given the other guy has enough flexibility/long arms. Won't knock him out, but will likely distract enough and help create space/escape. I would bury my forehead into the side/back of the guy's neck -- still keeping it close but at the same time it only exposes the hard parts of your head to a potential punch. There's nothing to see up there in front, so why look.
