This part I can really agree with. My comments are less about the practitioners in the clip and more about a particular application that I don't like and feel should not always be so emphasized. IMO, when someone pushes on your right shoulder, turning to the right is the wrong direction to yield. You end up yielding your way right into a dead end that way.
Following the 4 ounce rule it would depend on what foot is forward. If its your right foot it will retreat with the force in that direction. If its left foot forward as your right shoulder retreats your left hand engages your opponent. This applies to grasps sparrows tail. To dead end doesn't happen as the cornering moves are bought into play. According to the rule you must always go with the force ( neither resist nor let go).

I'm not sure what your saying with this clip but if you run ahead of his force(4 ounces principle) he would be open to shoulder stroke. Speed of response is relative to speed of attack (give up yourself and follow your opponent). He would be also open to a borrowed force punch at the whipping point. Of course this would require a reasonable level of skill as the big fella in this clip is quite skillful.

hehe...I was thinking something like that.

I'm a huge fan of the Australian bloke but having met Sam even just that once, I'd say that the answer is not so simple. lol

Wayne - my apologies. So, who are the guys in the clip?

dear 64
the main guy in the clip is an old pushing partner of mine.
the other two are people he had not known very long who were involved in pushing hands competition.
they asked if they could film the meeting,he was slightly reluctant as he had not pushed for the last 18 years.
he asked me to agree not to reveal his name if i posted the clips.
i hope you can respect his right to privacy as he only teaches a small group of dedicated students and
is not part of the commercial tai chi world.

You know what's crazy about that too is that was right before his knee surgery, so his knee was at its worst about then, so he was essentially using only one leg all the time.:D

Agreed.

Sam is very good but there's no point in making comparisons. My own comments were not meant to disparage the Australian guy at all. Sam's not a god or anything. He's just one of the very best I've met and more specifically, he's particularly good at making very good and very quick internal changes. His energy is not broken anywhere I could sense it. Those breaks in continuity are where you can do things like respond to an arm yank with a shoulder stroke.

For all I know, if I crossed hands with the Australian guy, I might feel he was just as good as Sam. I commented on Sam because I have personally felt what he has to offer. I can't say that about the Australian guy.
