kyokushin karate vs. Muay Thai

Postby Kurt Robbins on Thu Jul 03, 2008 3:32 pm

I found this really interesting especially with kyokushin fighters giving Muay Thai fighters in MMA a hard time
George St. Pierre and Machida come to mind.

You can see Changphuak Kiatsongrit getting really frustrated - also I am not sure of the rule sets, for neither are punching and the rules with the knees have me clueless. ???

looked like kyokushin rules to me...

looked like you could knee to the torso but not the head, and no punches to the head.

again, I think this further supports the argument that rule set can make or break your style effectiveness. Not that anyone was an inadequate fighter or could not fight under a different rules set. The fight would have just looked different & may (or not) had a different outcome.

Cro Cop is a Kyokushin/MT fighter, and a student of Branko Cikatic--another Kyokushin/MT hybrid fighter. the same is true of most Euro MT fighters of that era due the influence of the Dutch and French MT/KK gyms that dominated the scene at the time.

Nor is K-1 Muay Thai. Limited to no clinching allowed + no elbows=not MT. Regardless, Hug lost to other fighters too. IIRC Peter Aerts KO'd him.

Peter Aerts is a monster - that guy can kick hard!

I agree; in that environment where the clinch is taken out, is basically sending out a parapalegic Muay Thai fighter. In relevence the Kyokoshen fighter in the UFC especially George St.Pierre utilizes the Muay Thai clinch and its extensive arsenal.
Sit Yod Tong, Thanks for the info on the Euro scene, that fill in a lot blanks.

ashe,
you missed my point. It was not about Hug or his abilities. The point was simply no punches to the head takes out a lot of some folks arsenal. I just listened to the Ken Fish podcast (good stuff -keep up the quality work). Anyway, like ken said he referred a match where traditionally trained guys kept getting disqualified for excessive contact. Same deal here. The MT guy probably had to keep reminding himself "dont punch the head" & that extraneous thinking is enough to take your mojo.
With regard to Hug, I watched a bunch of vids on that guy. He was a monster in any venue, any rule set. He won & lost his share. No doubt he would kick me like a puppy. Point being, if you dont train it, you may find yourself at a disadvantage

Highlight of that whole match for me was the sweep AND downward punch to the gut as he was horizontal in the air.

no, i realize how the rules can affect you, but my feeling was simply that the thai fighter just didn't seem to be hugs match, regardless of the rules.

Just shows how far things have come in recent years. The thought of two stand up, strike-based pro-fighters getting in a ring today and NOT being allowed to punch to the face in this day and age seems unlikely.

Watching that small and aged referee throw down the kyokushin fighter was worth wathching the video alone. Anyway I agree with jafc, I too think that the MT guy was highly penalized by the rules set. In my very humble opinion the outcome could have been exactly the other way round had the match been played by MT rules
