If I may, I believe that Strange is talking about the use of the body or the lack thereof during this drill.

The only time the whole body seems to be engaged is during the first contact when ma bo changes to gong bo. When I learned this drill in Hung Ga almost 30 years ago it was taught that the kua & twisting of the hips supplied the power for contact & motion, not just swinging the arm from the shoulder muscles.

I believe he's saying that those who only use the shoulder muscles in the arms without the whole body being connected here come into contact with one who has developed a strong frame & root from doing lots of zhan zhuang there will be a difference in the result.

Seeing those participants bang their arms and clash into each other rigidly brings one word to mind -- "OUCH!"

What they need is some short-range vibration and spiraling power that neutralize the force on the contact point and disperse it throughout the frame, rather than having all of it stuck on one point

ian - i wrote in english; albeit in a long winded kinda way. usually if i dun understand something i read it again; if i think its worth my while; if not i flip over to the cartoon page for peanuts, garfield and bizarro. maybe i was just saying that if you fight, you might want to work on your hands and arms abit; or i just lamenting the high price of fuel these days.

which sort of loses the focus of what the drill is about, no? unless, of course, the whole point of 3 star is to learn how to smash forearms as hard as you can, but i have a sneaking suspicion that there's a bit more to it than that.

but hey--as long as they're having fun, right?
