Toward the second half of 1949, --

Shang hai was in a disarray, due to superinflation, and fall of nan king was a psychological event that the road for nationalist government seemed to be nearing its end.

General Li Zhong Ren was the president while CKS was relieved and on vacation in Zhe Jiang. However, CKS was still in control of the army.

CKS attempted to enter Shanghai to restore some confidence in people and everyone. He was almost captured by the communists. so Sadly, he left Shanghai. It is a city where he started. --

Now, the communist field army moved toward where ever CKS went and tried to capture him.

When CKS went to Guan Zhou (canton), the 4th field army (Lin Biu) moved toward guan zhou.

When CKS went to Chung King, the 3rd field army (Deng Xiao Ping, Liu Bo Cheng) moved toward si chuan.

Finally, everything seemed hopeless. CKS left Cheng Du before daybreak, without a final look at Cheng Du, he flew to taipei, taiwan.

The scout communist troops were near the airfield. some barriers were set up in the airfield. The first plane carrying staff crashed at takeoff. Luckily nobody was hurt. To stay or to leave. Everyone "tried" to convince CKS to leave. With a long sigh, CKS said zhou ba or let's go. Some people were singing the national anthem. CKS's plane took off and several other planes also took off. Chiang Jing Kuo was there, too. Everyone knew this is the last day in China. When to come back, nobody knew.

CKS's plane circled one last time in Cheng Du and headed to Taipei.

On January 1st, 1950, CKS came out and annouced that he reassume the presidency and head the government in a temporary seat of Taipei.

General Chen Cheng was already in Taiwan to stablize everything. He was relieved from a commanding post in northeast China and came to Taiwan on a sick leave but actually to reorganize the army in Taiwan.

General Sun Li Ren also supported CKS when he first came to Taiwan.

When the nationalist army retreated from Shang hai due to Japanese reinforcement landed south of Shang hai. To avoid being encirlced and wiped out so early in war. gradually retreating and resisting toward the west was the plan.

There were troops stationed inside nan king. However, the commanding officer left town. So all the troops abandoned their uniforms and weapons on the street meaning surrender.

Japanese army started to look out for young people (suspecting them being soldiers disguised as civillians) and execute them near the river. They said both sides did not declare war so geneva convention did not count. They are not POW. However, women and children???

There were 2 Japanese soldiers competing how many innocent people thay may -- Their military swords are in exhibit in National Army military history museum near my high school. I saw the swords, display, photos many times when I was in high school.

This is a recent Taiwan TV documentary on the events in 1949.

1. general Bai Chong Xi withheld his troops and not helping the battle in central China. and he also held the golds and silvers from the national reserves and gave CKS a ultimatum that 1, ask the british, us and russia to intervene. 2 organize civilian to ask for peace, 3 all troops and army cease fire. Bai together with general Li Zhong Ren forced CKS to step down.

2. on Dec, 1948, CKS assigned general Chen Cheng to be Taiwan's governor.

3. Jan, 1949, CKS stepped down. He went to hang zhou and then xi kou, his hometown. CKS was very depressed. How come such as a great land (rivers and mountains), there is not a single spot that I may stand/stay. general Li was ready to talk with mao.

4. on Feb, 3rd, PLA/red army entered beijing. general Fu Zhuo Yi surrendered.

5. Li zhong ren send representatives to beijing to negociate peace. He believed that he may hold against the communists along the longest river. However, PLA was ready to cross the river.

6. Communists replied with 8 conditions and demanding the surrender of nanjing government. 1. severely punish war criminals. #1: CKS, #2: Li Zhong Ren, #3: Bai chong xi.-- 2. abolish the ROC constitution. 3. abolish president. vp, cabinet members elected. --

7. There were 3 heads. Li zhong ren was the acting president in nanjing. Sun Ke was the premier and moved office to guan zhou and CKS was KMT chair and office in Taipei. CKS was still in control of the army and finance.

8. on april, 20th, 1949, PLA crossed the longest river. Zhang Zhi Zhong went to beijing to negociate for peace and actually he surrendered, too and stayed. Bai then turned to CKS again. a special committee was formed in KMT at this time.

9. on april, 23rd, 1949, PLA entered nanjing.

10. PROC founded on oct, 1949.

11. on nov, 20th, 1949, Li flew to US via hongkong. at the end of nov, Huang Jie and Bai chong xi troops were defeated. Bai went to Hai nan and CKS went to Taipei.

Li zhong ren eventually went back to China, on july , 1965. the next year, Bai passed away or sudden death in Taipei on nov, 1966.
