messing around with boxing

one of my kids and I like to mess around with boxing lately. aiming for chest only so it's basically impossible but pretty hilarious and fun. not really sure what to do next. i can see how really doing this sparring would be amazingly fun.

Why is this OTT?

Knee tag and shoulder tag are lots of fun. Both games teach hand discipline and awareness. Keep the fingers pressed together and the thumbs snug against the index fingers.

Take turns trying to tag the other guy's knee with your fingertips. Use your hands to block. Practice jamming and/or intercepting the incoming bicep or shoulder. Knee tag has the possibility of accidental headbutts if they sprawl while you duck in, so dads should let the little wookie win.

Shoulder tag using parrying and turning the body to block and guard. Teaches kids to hold up their hands in 'lazy guard'.

For turning the body, practice only turning the upper torso and blocking/parrying the incoming hand/arm while leaving your non-blocking hand/arm in place. It teaches good countering discipline.

not sure about OTT but we're just being silly for the most part.

hmm, ok knee tag and shoulder tag is probably a progression we can try next...

I can't see how martial arts can be trained without sparring.

Many beginners sports comps work off the tag to the body rules and add body protectors. TWD does it with 4+ year olds.

To add a bit of flavour tagging could be also done to the top of the head with 16oz gloves. Emphasises importance of head movement. Tagging the legs with kicks will open up leg movement.

If a little impact is desired but feared then add body protectors, head gear, bigger gloves (18oz+) & shin padding. Or get a sumo suit.

Progression for impact rules to get inspiration: TWD -> Karate point sparring -> Bubble suits like koshiki or fully padded sanda/twd/karate types -> Any no head kickboxing type -> Boxing -> Kickboxing -> Combat sambo, Shotokan, Amateur MMA (no head shots but no gloves/4oz gloves) -> MT -> Pancrase (if elbows included) -> Professional MMA rules

16oz gloves good for training allowing one to get hit and hit without to much damage..
