Instead of an air pistol, a gun with a much more powerful lithium ion battery that can shoot 0.177 to 0.50 cal projectiles. Carry two: one is chambered for stopping power and a capacity of 20, and one for suppression fire with 100 or more BB's. At the bar, instead of sobriety for driving, you'd be the Designated Defender.

Since I'm not old enough to be walking around with a cane without arousing suspicion, this would be better:

Though I lose umbrellas all the time and I'd be terrified of losing something this expensive.

Can it shield for bullets flying when folded open? Does it turn “inside out” when actually using it and it’s windy weather or can one do a Mary Poppins fly away with it ? To whack someone in the head and poke an eye my regular brella would work fine I guess

I doubt it does much other than being a really durable stick that you can walk around without looking suspicious. However, I'm sure most umbrellas are way too weak for any self defense. I've had one that literally bent just from me trying to shake the water off.

What I have is not good enough by half. I have Fox 5.3 Stream pepper spray and a kubotan.

Even the good grade pepper sprays used by cops (such as Fox and Saber Red) frequently fail to do the job. Of course you know the joke about the kubotan. It is a fine weapon for someone who does not really need a weapon to deal with the situation. It is not without its good points; the Number Two Wrist Lock will certainly get someone's attention, but you have to be right there, no standoff distance at all.

And, that's the thing, unless someone gets close enough to use his hands (or a hand weapon), the perp will keep shooting.

Of course, this is true for someone with a knife or club. In an attack, someone will have to go forward. Btw, I think a beer bottle or a shot glass would work just as well. Of course, this strategy works best when a lot of people (or everyone) is prepared to react in the same way. The more people who act, the sooner the threat can be eliminated.

Read on today’s yahoo news headlines that an university in the US plan on gearing up on ice hockey pucks to be used in case of shooting assault.

Disco, church, of kindergarten ... yep, does seem excessive, unless one is expecting a gunfight. In that case, it would be safest to stay home. :)

I think the question is "what weapon would you give to every person at event X?" And, the objective is solely to mitigate the number of casualties, not prevent or deter shootings. Fair enough, just sad.

I suspect rocks or bricks would be much cheaper and just as useful, maybe more so.

A few years ago I left a bar in a relatively highly inebriated state, was threatened by someone who said he'd rob me at a bus stop, and successfully defended myself against him...until 5 other guys ran in. Luckily I wasn't hurt and got away, but it changed my whole take on things because after a lot of lucky times of being the victor in scuffles, this experience made me realize that the whole fighting a guy with honor thing is pretty dumb in these types of violent situations (a concept I knew in theory very well since day one of training martial arts, but clearly did not apply in my life).

So my new go to is: a "utility" folding knife (my main is a cold steel ak-47: good blade length, concealable, and easily taken out of my pocket and ready to go in one motion) and pepper spray. The pepper spray would have to be ready preemptively in a best case scenario, but either way it lets you do some damage and distort someone's vision from a distance. At that point, having a knife and martial arts skill puts any martial artist at a major advantage even against other martial artists and other attackers. That said, I'd prefer to have an extendable baton instead of a knife, but I don't have the baton because it's more of a hassle. Overall, (preferred portable concealable weapon) + (pepper spray/mace) seems pretty optimal for me. I'd definitely like to see what else is out there thought.
