Read the book and a lot of Gaiman's work.

I like that yarn style of storytelling and modern fantasy is my guilty pleasure reading.

Now that Tj mentions it, I never read the book, but there are scenes in the show that borrow from multiple sources at once, like dialog from one movie and a visual from a different one.

I don't have the vid any more to double check, but there was this obscure and strange film from 1979 starring Jeff Bridges called "Winter Kills", and this is not a spoiler, but there's a scene in this new episode of Gods that is very similar to that film, while borrowing dialog from another one I can't place.

Don't get me wrong, he's better than Janet Evanovich or Dan Brown, but he's no Heinlein.

I just read "Stranger in a Strange Land". Wow for a book that started out so well, and had me commenting on almost every page how fantastic it was, it really turned into a steaming pile of crap. I should probably read "Starship Troopers" next.

Troopers is a good read, but doesn't have much of a story, whereas the movie does have a continuous plot. I think they complement each other.

Yeah, I never got the "Stranger in a Strange Land" deal either. Troopers raises a lot of higher level philosophical issues (i.e. should people who have no investment in a society have a voice in how it is run), but is really just pulp fiction too. Granted I thought most of Moorcock's later books weren't great either.

A lot of the "masters" of fantasy are really just one degree removed from serials/dime store/fanzine level fiction. Both Gaiman and Butcher (of Harry Dresden fame) are fun reads, but I doubt much of it will survive the test of time.

Butcher is super pulpy and I suspect most of his reference jokes won't be understood by future generations.

But he's a hell of a fun read if you're the target audience.

I read Hyperion and it didn't click with me, but I was very young at the time.

My favorite part of the book: https://asinusspinasmasticans.wordpress.com/2009/03/06/neil-gaiman-nails-the-neo-pagans/
And yes, I am enjoying the series.

Three eps in and it's slower than molasses. I'm done.
