Definitely some pretty bad writing, but OTOH, after reading that pantsers vs. planners article, I cut them some slack, because how the hell can you end this show?

Exactly.
I actually liked it. I do wish they took more time developing D's transition from the 'breaker of chains' to the 'incinerator of all', probably over a couple more episodes, but it is what it is. Also, IMDb's current rating of the last episode, 4.4, is fucking ludicrous, putting it alongside some of the very worst movies and shows out there. They didn't deserve that, it's a total BS, purely emotional, lash-out, knee-jerk voting that is utterly unfair. There I said it.

well, why, if they had 10 episodes in seasons 1-6, did they only have 6 in season eight? budget? if everyone is complaining we needed 3 or 4 episodes, they could've done that? no idea what happened there.
