Masvidal's Flying Knee (vs double leg): Fastest Ever UFC KO

What can happen when rushing in attempting to bridge, grab and pull limbs.

Excerpt from "Jorge Masvidal's Flying Knee Set UFC's Fastest-Ever KO in 5 Seconds:"
NATHAN MCCARTER on JULY 6, 2019 wrote:Jorge Masvidal just scored the 2019 Knockout of the Year with the fastest KO in UFC history on Saturday.

Masvidal and Ben Askren talked a lot of trash back-and-forth to one another in the lead-up to their UFC 239 bout in Las Vegas. They were even talking before the referee began the action. Masvidal was all smiles and had his hands behind his back.

Masvidal looked like a kid who snuck a peek at his Christmas presents the night before. A cheeky grin knowing exactly what was about to happen.

Masvidal sprinted forward, Askren ducked for a takedown and Masvidal launched a perfect flying knee. Askren went stiff immediately. Masvidal was able to land a few follow-up shots on the canvas before the referee pulled him away just five seconds into the bout.

Excerpts from "Mike Brown releases footage of Jorge Masvidal drilling knee that KO'd Ben Askren in five seconds:"
Mike Bohn on July 7, 2019 wrote:It was all part of the game plan. . . .

Masvidal’s coach, Mike Brown of American Top Team, posted footage of Masvidal training the exact flying knee sequences that flattened Askren just five seconds into their key welterweight bout on Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

From the side-step to the sprint, it’s all there, and “Gamebred” executed it perfectly (via Instagram).

At the UFC 239 post-fight news conference, Masvidal explained why he felt the technique was the appropriate way to start the fight.

“A part of me just wanted to throw it out there so he knew: If you do shoot like an idiot like you only know how too, your head is going to get clipped,” Masvidal said. “He took the bait. I put my hands behind my back, he probably thougt we were going to (expletive) patty-cake it up, but he walked right into it."

If you need any further evidence, UFC interim lightweight champion Dustin Poirier shared some text messages with coach Brown from prior to UFC 239 confirming the game plan was to open with the flying knee (via Twitter): . . .

I think at least somebody needs to point out that knee is in Xingyi monkey and therefore we claim credit to the internal arts for the knockout.

D'Amato taught that blows had to have "bad intentions" behind them. It was the bad intentions behind that knee that knocked Askren out. He was preparing to grapple, and the other guy was trying to hurt him.

It came from Grahame’s podcast XYQ teachings, he’s just too humble to specifically point that out 8-)

Yes, but without the smile, hands behind the back and no "(expletive) patty-caking it up" (no push hands or bridging). Plus, the aliveness training method for learning to apply it—trainer with body shield walking forward with pressure to develop the timing, speed and power.

There was an arrogance about Askren that all he needed was his wrestling skills, unlike Khabib Nurmagomedov who understands setup skills are important.

That knee was developed in the Song Dynasty. It just too 800 years to arrive on Askren's noggin. That's some serious planning.

I was trying to think of some other flying knees. Couldn't think of any immediate sprints.

Of course there was the flying knee Arlovski tried when he was clearing winning the boxing match up vs. Fedor and maybe stupidly (in hindsight) thought "I've got him now".

And for whatever reason Fedor threw his big punch at the exact right (or wrong from Arlovski's pov) time. Someone was going to get KOed for sure at that moment. You can see Fedor still throws a left even as Arlovski was already almost hitting the ground already asleep, so Fedor was probably thinking "right - left" then "oh shit ok".
