Yes, I understand. It's very tough to stop people who have strange local habits of eating protected animals, as long as they want to do that. But still, this in not something general going on in all of China, but has to do with a very small group of people in small local places.

The central government can’t be blamed, but perhaps local officials can.

I believe they should. Not directly for the outbreak, but they have responsibility for the overall situation in the country. The central government takes a lot of money in taxes but give very little back. They don't care about the rest of China and do very little for Chinese people not not having hukou in Beijing or Shanghai. The result is sometimes quite bad local leadership. (Just look at my "hometown" Kunming, where all of the highest city leaders for the last 30 years, mayor or what's the equivalent is in China, they all sit together in the same jail for corruption and different other crimes. And almost no development of the city has occurred in all of this time.)

Its interesting, “westerners”(not pointing at you) complain how the Chinese regime is too oppressive, but now complain the regime acting too sloppy.

My thought exactly. People here complain about the increasing surveillance in the last five or ten years or so. But in fact, if you look at Hubei and Wuhan, some better surveillance with stationary cameras or camera equipped drones (used here by the police), could help stop things as illegal markets and illegal trade with live animals.

Yunnan has become a bit more popular the last 15 years or so. The international airport might have something to do with it, but I don’t believe that Yunnan has been promoted very much. There’s a whole lot of Koreans and Japanese tourists, and increasing amount of western students. But there’s a whole lot of things that is necessary to do if it will work good for tourism. The information is minimal and the infrastructure quite terrible. People have a very hard time to travel free by themselves, so it’s still very much about groups. If they did more, the tourism to Yunnan could be absolutely fantastic and do very, very much for the whole province.

Today from my point of view here in Huainan. I haven’t been outside my living compound for over a week(grown a little bit more lazy), however today went outside for a long walk. It feels a little odd, I mean it looks almost as usual, lots of cars on the toad, more shops open up. Although I did not go to the nearby mall to see how’s that place doing, but yesterday night I ordered home delivery from KFC at that mall, tasted great plus the coffee, KFC coffee is quite ok, as is McDonald’s, a blessing compared to the Nescafé I’ve had for a month now I think.
Some weeks ago, was It a month? Three cases of the virus was reported at the neighboring block, but they’re back home, wasn’t serious, no worries. Actually the whole area no cases, several thousand of people, no cases.
This what’s feels odd, especially if I read reports on Swedish news where one almost could get the impression that here’s an Zombie Apocalypse going on. Well maybe it’s so in WuHan, I hope not. And I hope that it is as it felt today when I was out, buzzingly lively with a sunny sky on top of that, a positive feeling that everything soon back on track.

from what I heard the mortality rate among those under 80 is 1 in 200... 0.5%...official fatality toll as of today was 2000 out of 100000 infected but most of those who were lost were old and infirm already.

Besides deaths you have to worry about life-long lung damages. A lot of people that survived SARS ended up with life-long debilitating condition. I would imagine that number is bigger than the number of deaths.

its now calculated that end of this month it people in wuhan will no longer be at risk getting infected by the corona virus. and from my point of view in my city Huainan commerce around my neighborhood is getting close to normal. But then from what i read on swedish news its almost the feeling of panic over there, the other day reports of shelves in supermarkets are empty, today in state media psycologist gives advise on how to manage ones corona fear...and plenty more scare propaganda....by the way, shanghai also seem quite safe now.

Good to hear :)

The number of people already killed by the flue
gets very little press... :P

CDC estimates* that, from October 1, 2019, through February 22, 2020, there have been:

18,000 – 46,000
flu deaths

what do you think is the basis of this calculation? mainly that the extensive quarantines have reduced the contact points?

In that case, places unable/unwilling to have the same level of quarantine control are going to have different projections.

Not sure I trust any government numbers coming out of China but it seems it can get a better handle on the actual quarantines of huge numbers of people than can the USA and other large countries.

The other day I read somewhere that in the US they will now try out/test some specific quarantine actions. Same here in China, they will now try out new quarantine actions, one involving colored barcodes where Red is for those who are believed to have spent time in “high risk zones” and then “gentler” colors depending on how safe the areas one has been to.
Those with Red will of course be more strictly quarantined, and that eases up depending what other color bar code one has received.......something like that ! (don’t know if my explanation made any sense there? 8-) )
This will be tested in some limited areas in a couple of cities
